Dover's Got It, Do You?
Dover's got love for you - do you have love for it? Ok, ok, maybe it's too soon to be dropping the ""L"" bomb, so let's pull back a little.
Dover sits west of New York City in upstate New Jersey on the Rockaway River, a watery testimony to nature's bounty unfortunately known for flooding. But we prefer to look on the bright side. At least northern New Jersey need not fear a drought.
Another upside to Dover is its food. With a heavy emphasis on Latino offerings (or Hispanic) in addition to other gut busting exemplars of cooking done right, the city is considered a bit of a haven/heaven for the foody-inclined. That would include everybody, wouldn't it?
Peruse through our Apartment Guide for tips and advice to help you get acquainted with your new city. Want to get the inside track on the place? Partake in LocalTalk to score some practical tips relating to all things in the area and remember to use the ""Ask a Question"" feature to get personalized feedback from locals anxious to share their knowledge of the city and the apartment rental scene.
Dover's Rental Figures: We Got 'Em
How do you feel about one bedroom rentals that allow cats but not dogs? Or perhaps a two bedroom that allows both but with a hefty deposit? In fact, how do you feel about pets, period? After all, not everybody loves them.
Putting animal companions aside, we think you should know what you're dealing with here in Dover as far as apartment pricing goes.Check out our rental and census data tables as well as our other fact sheets for more info about affordability and options for your future new digs. So get moving on your quest for the pad you'll think is rad by clicking on the rentals listed below.
A No Nonsense Introduction to Dover
We’re going to give it to you straight. Because a tough, no nonsense approach to things is the Jersey way, right?
West Jersey"" wasn't always just a part of the state you say you're from, more or less. It was once an official political jurisdiction, matched, quite unsurprisingly, by an East Jersey. This would prove to be a short lived division in the historical scheme of things, lasting only for the duration of the last quarter of the 17th century. Dover's roots lie in this saga of the west end, as it were, after land bought from the indigenous folk was deeded to a one Mr. Joseph Latham and his lovely wife, who in turn sold it to John Jackson, a relative ""northerner"" from the great state of New York. We reckon Mr. Jackson figured that if he could make it there, he could make it anywhere, including upstate New Jersey.
Things wouldn't remain on the up and up for Mr. Jackson however. He went broke 1753 and was forced to sell his land to a Quaker (they of the peaceful disposition) by the name of Hartshorne Fitz Randolph. Years later, in 1826 to be exact, the city officially became ""Dover,"" and not to deploy a cliche, but the rest is history.
Oops, looks like we deployed it anyway
Dover's got a claim to fame that is bound to resonate with...well, not too many. Unless you've seen The Wrestler with Mickey Rourke. The final scene takes place there. Or Eddie Money's music video for ""I Wanna Go Back,"" was also shot here. Oh, and HBO's The Sopranos made good use of the city too, not surprisingly. But why not make your own memories here? If it makes you feel especially big and important, go ahead and record it for posterity. And promotional purposes of course.
Dover and Doin' Stuff: The Basics
Dover's considered a good walking town, so be prepared to hoof it from your new apartment. Or drive if you must. But the zeitgeist involves reducing your carbon footprint, so just keep that in mind.
Among the places you can presumably walk to is the Community Children's Museum. There's apparently a life size replica of Van Gogh's bedroom here, all the better with which to enjoy the sight of children enjoying a facsimile of history. May the youth of America go on to create great art! This time without injury.
Another area mainstay is the flea market held on Sundays from April to December. There appears to be everything you expect at a flea market here and then some, including...an Ozzy Osbourne impersonator? The only evidence for such a figure lurking about consists of this thumbnail image, but it sure looks solid to us.
And since you're already walking (unless you in fact decided to drive, after all) there's no excuse not to take a stroll through the city’s many parks. They include JFK Commons Park, Crescent Field, and Triangle Park in downtown. Plus others. If you like your outdoor public properties minimal and no-frills, you'll have to drop by Hurd Park. It's considered a ""passive park,"" a category we hadn't heard of until now. To literally see the difference between a ""passive"" and an ""active"" park, go here, after of course you start searching for your new apartment.

How is the nightlife in Dover?
With a population of about 18,000, Dover's nightlife is more than adequate for the town's size. Perhaps the highest concentration of bars occurs in downtown Dover. Blackwell St is home to Pub 66, Unique Bar and Grill, and Murray's, while McFarlan St to the north is home to Charlotte's Web, Quiet Man, and Attilio's Tavern. The Bassett Pub and Los Arrieros lie between Blackwell and McFarlan. There are also a few more bars on the outskirts of Dover.

What does everyone in Dover do for fun in their spare time and on weekends?
Located an hour west of New York City, many Dover residents venture into the city on weekends to take advantage of its restaurants, bars, museums, and nightlife, but for those that prefer to stay in town, Dover itself offers a few of these establishments as well. Dover also has a lot to offer in terms of outdoor activity, since the area is full of parks. Minisink County Park to the northwest offers hiking, camping, biking, and fishing. To the southwest, the Black River Wildlife Management Area features over 3,000 acres of river bottom, swampy woodland, freshwater marsh, fields, and woods, and its Patriots' Path, which follows four miles of the abandoned Chester Branch of the Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western Railroad, offers hiking and horseback riding in the summer as well as cross-country skiing in the winter months. Allamuchy Mountain Park to the northwest offers more than 14 miles of marked trails and 20 miles of unmarked trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, and other activities include fishing, hunting, rock climbing, boating, canoeing, and picnicking.
