Doin' It Dothan
Securing an apartment will be super easy cause you’ve come to the right place!
This town way down in the southeast portion of the Yellowhammer State (Alabama) cozies up to Georgia to its right and Florida down below. It gets its name from the Bible, Genesis in particular, which should be no big surprise given the city's deep south locale. Unlike the northern part of the state which is surprisingly mountainous, Dothan's landscape is flat, flat, and more flat.

The Fundamentals of Dothan
At one time, way back yonder, what we now know as Dothan was inhabited by the aptly named Alabama and Creek native tribes. Then a vast and natural forest, much of the area was later cleared for development. In the early 19th century the city was dubbed ""Poplar Head,"" and saw huge numbers of settlers move in during the 1830s to take advantage of the timber industry of the time. The Civil War threw a monkey wrench into the best laid plans of mice and timber men, however, and like many a town at the time, Poplar Head had to put its usual shenanigans on hiatus for the duration of the bloodiest war the U.S. has ever seen.
With Poplar Head finally giving way to ""Dothan"" in 1885 with the town's official incorporation, soon this Alabama locale would see the arrival of rail mark a game changing turn of events. With the ability to now hawk their products well beyond the vicinity of the Deep South, the city prospered.
Unlike some of the area's farmers, the city avoids putting its all its output in one basket. It's got a diversified economy with the catch-all category of ""Services"" claiming the largest single slice of the pie at 22%. And now that we've sort of broached the subject of food twice (farmers and pie), it only makes sense to inform you that this is the home of the annual National Peanut Festival. Why Dotham? Well as Mr. Peanut knows but no doubt keeps quiet about given his preference for the big city, the hundred or so miles around Dothan is responsible for half the peanut production in America.
But just so you know, the fairgrounds that play host to the National Peanut Festival are available year round for gun shows and demolition derbies and the like. Plus the Toadlick Music Festival.
Don't Dither: Get Out And Do Dothan!
So sure there's the peanut shindig, but that's not all to look forward to once you move into your new apartment in this city of around 65,000. And while the topic of peanuts is possibly well-nigh exhausted at this point, we'd be remiss not to mention the George Washington Carver Museum. This guy discovered more than 300 ways to make use of the peanut. Apart from its use as a method for just barely satiating your hunger, how many have you discovered?
The Dothan Area Botanical Gardens are a great way to treat your eyes and nose to a thrill the likes of which you won't soon forget. Seriously, rose flowers can leave a mess all over your whites if you're not careful. You can even hold weddings there if that special day is on the horizon. (If it isn't, sorry we brought it up.)
And finally, no local experience would be complete without a visit to the world's smallest city block, at least as determined by the Guinness Book of World Records. From the looks of it you can round the block in about four seconds. Or maybe three. Heck, once you’re in your new apartment why not try and see if you can't make a new record for the history books.
