Dodge City has its roots in the Old West. The town began in 1872 as people started to settle near Fort Dodge for safety on the relatively lawless frontier, not to mention proximity to the Santa Fe Trail that ran from Fort Dodge to Santa Fe. Thanks to the trail, Dodge City set a record for growth, with new shops and homes popping up like dandelions. Eventually the excitement of the Old West had to give way to more modern ways, but many of the cowboys and other Western folk turned around, and used their hard-won skills putting on Western shows.
