Deptford is home to one of New Jersey's largest malls. In addition to being the largest shopping center in the area, the town's namesake Deptford Mall serves as the centerpiece of a major commercial and business district in town. In addition to the anchor tenant and smaller mall stores, the area around the mall has plenty to offer Deptford residents, including movie theaters, both local and chain restaurants, office space, and strip malls with smaller boutiques. In addition to providing a lot of shopping, dining, and entertainment for local Deptford residents, this part of town is a big draw for residents from neighboring towns and throughout Gloucester County.
Hot Air Balloons in D
Hot air balloons may be a more common sight around Deptford than they are in most places in New Jersey thanks to an early historical event. In 1793, a French balloon flight pioneer named Jean-Pierre Blanchard flew a hot-air balloon 15 miles from Philadelphia to Deptford. George Washington himself watched Blanchard take off, and Blanchard carried an explanatory letter from Washington to present to the likely confused owners of the property upon which he landed. Today, the site of Blanchard's historic landing, which marks the first balloon flight in America, is commemorated with a plaque and a tree in Deptford.
Family Time in Fasola
Parents of kids young enough to enjoy playgrounds will love Fasola Park, which is popular with local families thanks to it its kids' play areas and scenic views. This park is well regarded by parents in Deptford, noting the separate play areas suitable for children of different ages so old and young have fun on their own. In addition to providing a regular, day-to-day outlet for family fun, this park is also the site of some special events. Typically held in summer, Family Fun Days are kid-focused performance events put on during the day at Fasola Park.
