The Denton County Courthouse-on-the-Square is the local courthouse for Denton County. The city of Denton is the county's county seat, which makes having the courthouse for all county proceedings a necessity. The courthouse has been a staple of the community, having been in existence since 1896 and having been recently placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The facility also has a museum, called the Courthouse-on-the-Square Museum, which carries local historic pieces and artifacts. The courthouse has long been the final resting place of John B. Denton, whom the city and county were named for.
