Learning the History

Deerfield Beach is full of rich history that dates back to the 1890s. Originally known as Hillsborough due to its location near the Hillsboro River, as the city grew, the name was changed to reflect the deer that often grazed around the river. As the population began to increase, the Florida East Coast Railroad laid tracks nearby, which helped to boost the economy of this beach city. Farmers mainly inhabited the area and it remained a large agricultural community until the 1940s when Beach was added to the name in order to draw in tourists.
