Welcome Home to Decatur

Welcome to Decatur. This small, rural community is in Benton County, Arkansas. The town is just over two square miles and was named after war hero, Stephen Decatur, Junior. Decatur's average winter lows drop into the 30s while the average summer highs top out in the upper 80s. If you’re the type that likes cool weather and embraces all four seasons, this is a great part of the country to move to. Decatur is less than twenty miles from the state borders of Oklahoma and Missouri, so it's always easy to go on an out-of-state road trip! The city is about 100 miles from Tulsa, Oklahoma and about 125 from Springfield, Missouri.

Wondering what your occasional commute to Tulsa will be like? Maybe you'd like to know more about the local Chamber of Commerce? Or perhaps you just need to find out where you can get a killer breakfast sandwich. No problem. Simply type all those burning questions into our Ask a Question feature and a local expert will get back to you with the answers.

Getting a Feel for the Town

Decatur is certainly small, so if you like living in a place where everybody knows your name, this could be the town for you. Children in Decatur go to public schools in the Decatur School District. There is one elementary school, one middle school, and one high school serving slightly over 500 students. That certainly makes it easy to keep tabs on Junior's circle of friends!

Outside Adventures

You can find many opportunities for fishing and water activities in this part of Arkansas. Folks who like to fish will want to head over to Crystal Lake. The lake has a concrete boat ramp, picnic areas, a fishing pier, and plenty of fish just waiting for a tasty worm to nibble on. They don't sell bait lakeside, so be sure to stop along the way to get what you need. Other lakes in the area include Lake Windsor and Lake Eucha. Lake Eucha has boat ramps, a fishing dock, RV hookups, picnic areas, and grills, making it a great spot to spend a couple of days. There are also restrooms and showers on the lake, just in case swimming in lake water doesn’t count as bathing (we think it should). This is a nice place to come and relax, even if you're not into fishing. Enjoy the peace and quiet, go for a hike, or sit around and chat with friends.

If golf is your thing, you can find plenty of nearby courses to visit. Creeks Golf Course is in historic Cave Springs and has 18 holes along the Spring and Osage creeks. You can get plenty of practice in at the driving range as well. There’s also a putting green and the course offers private and group lessons. Creeks Course also has a nice creek-side lounge and bar to unwind in after another great walk spoiled.

Wild Adventures!

Looking for something different to do? Not a problem. Wild Wilderness Drive-Through Safari is in the neighboring town of Gentry, making it easy for residents of Decatur to take a walk on the wild side (or a drive through the wild side, anyway). This 400-acre site is home to over 85 species of animals including zebra, lions, hippopotami, and bears. Enjoy the 4-mile drive-through safari, petting parks, pony and camel rides, and stay for lunch at one of the picnic areas. This is a good place for the whole family to go wild.

Local Talk

Get answers about Decatur from local experts or tell us what you love about it.

  • Is Decatur a town where I'll need a car to get around?

Yes. As a very small city, Aiken is neither large nor dense enough to support a viable public transportation system. Being a small enough town in terms of area, it's possible to walk and bike to certain places, but the roads are rural and not terribly conducive to this type of transportation. In addition, hot summers and cold winters can make non-car transportation unpleasant. All of these factors make for a very car-oriented town.

  • How much are utilities in Decatur?

With very hot summers and cool winters, combined average monthly utilities in Decatur, which amount to about $180 a month, will vary widely depending on the season. Other factors include the size and age of your house, how many members are in your family, and how hot and cool you like to keep your house. Electric will be highest in the summer, while gas will most likely be highest in the winter. Since winters don't get too cold, however, the gas bill shouldn't get too high.

  • Is Decatur a good place for younger people?

Decatur is a city in Benton County, Arkansas, with a population of about 1,700. As a very small town located 30 minutes from Bentonville, the nearest sizeable city, Decatur would ostensibly not be the best place for most young people looking for a place to live. However, the demographics indicate otherwise. The population consists of 32 percent under the age of 18, 10 percent from 18 to 24, 33 percent from 25 to 44, 16 percent from 45 to 64, and 9 percent who were 65 years of age or older. With a median age of 29 years, Decatur has a large proportion of younger people living there, meaning that it's fairly easy to meet other young people and maintain an active social life.
