Historic Squirrel Cag

From 1885 to 1969, Council Bluffs was home to the Pottawattamie County Jail. Although residents are pleased that it no longer in operation, the building remains a unique piece of American history, as one of three remaining rotary jails, meaning that each cell composes one slice of a pie-shaped turntable. So to access a specific cell, the jailer would turn a crank to rotate the table until the right cell lined up with the opening. Today, the jail is owned by the county's historical society and is open to the public as a museum.
