Its metropolitan area is even larger, coming in at 310,531 people. When combined with the nearby cities of Auburn and Opelika, that metro area increases to nearly half of a million people. As a major metropolitan area in the state of Georgia, Columbus has a plethora of transportation options. These options include air, road, public and private busing systems. The highways coming in and out of the area include US Route 27, 80, 280, and 431. State Routes 1, 22, 85, 219, 411, 520, and 540 are also on that list. The main interstate serving the city is Interstate 85. The METRA Transit System serves not only Columbus, but all of Muscogee County, while the city is served on the interior by Greyhound.
