Area History

Thanks to its location on the East Coast, this part of the U.S. is steeped in rich history that includes the birth of the American nation and extends further back than the earliest white settlers. Cheektowaga gets its name from the native people who lived in this region before it was colonized by whites as a result of the Revolutionary War. Historical landmarks in the area include the Garrison Cemetery, also known as the War of 1812 Cemetery, which serves as a burial ground for American and British soldiers who fought in the region during the War of 1812.

Cheektowaga is home to two liberal colleges: Empire State College and Villa Maria College. Empire State is public and is part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system, while Villa Maria is a private institution. The majority of this school's student body attends school part time, indicating that the school understands the need for flexibility with scheduling for adult students.
