Canton’s got the Blues
If you’re a music lover, you’ll find that Canton is a great place to be. This town is so steeped in blues history that you can feel it all the way to your bones. Elmore James once lived in Canton, where he worked in a radio repair shop. Experts say this experience may have led to his development of a unique, electric style. Two locations on the Mississippi Blues Trail are here in Canton as well. The first one, Hickory Street, also known as “The Hollow,” was the heart of social life and entertainment for the African American community of central Mississippi through the 1970s. The second one is Club Desire which did its best to keep the blues elegant and sophisticated. The club had strict dress codes and behavior rules so there was no funny business allowed here; it was all about the music. Club Desire was the blues nightclub to play at from the 1940s to the 1960s. James Brown, B.B. King, Joes Turner, and the Platters all frequented this kickin’ joint. But Club Desire wasn’t just a place to sing the blues; it was also an important meeting place for civil rights workers. Visiting these places you can almost hear the a sad song pounding out of an old steel guitar. Oh wait, maybe that’s just the latest show getting started.
Shine a Little Light on Canton
Canton calls itself the “City of Lights” and it shines in all its holiday glory during the winter months. This city does the holiday season right with attractions and special events celebrating the season. The Historic Courthouse Square is decorated with over 200,000 lights—a great backdrop for the many festivities that are thrown there. The holiday festivals on this square are so incredible that they were even mentioned in the Arts and Entertainment Network’s “Best Small Town Christmas Spirit” special. Activities like the Victorian Festival, Carousel on the Square, Miniature Train on the Square, horse and buggy rides, and Santa’s Procession all help make the season bright, shiny, and just as warm and fuzzy as can be.
Market Day
The Canton Flea Market Arts and Crafts Show is a big source of town fun and pride. The market was named Best Flea Market in Mississippi by Mississippi Magazine and is held on the lawn of the historic courthouse. It’s easy to see why this market makes such an impression: there are over 1,000 artists and craftsman that take part in the show.
