Area Schools and Coll

Unlike many districts, Brownwood Community Schools not only have excellent records in sports but also performing arts, academic, and other extracurricular competitions. The city's commitment to quality education is commendable and pays off in leaps and bounds as students continually wow educators and parents with high SAT and ACT scores. Quality education beyond high school is easily achieved in Brownwood as well, with Ranger College, Texas State Technical College, and Howard Payne University campuses all located within the city, and Texas State Tech partners with Brownwood High School to offer associate degree tracks for college-bound students.

Brownwood Lake State

Brownwood Lake State Park's nearly 550 lush acres of Hill Country beauty are just minutes north of the city. Lake Brownwood is the focal point of the park, where fishing, swimming, water skiing, and boating are all popular. Picnic along the shore and take in the glorious sunsets. Hike the more than 2.5 miles of intermediate trails, or set out for a more intensive nature study on the half-mile, rustic nature trail. Breathe in the wonders of the Cross Timbers and Prairies' diverse plant and animal life, and see more than 150 species of waterfowl and other birds that frequent the park.

Brownwood Live

No month is devoid of live music or theater shows, thanks to Brownwood's active performing arts scene. The Brownwood Area Live on Stage concert series brings classical, pop, Christian, jazz, and other musicians to town for monthly shows while the Lyric Performing Arts Company presents choral concerts, stage plays, and other performances throughout the year in various locations, including area churches and the high school fine arts center. Two large-scale productions from the acclaimed Brownwood High School theater group and a multitude of faculty and student performances at Howard Payne University contribute to the city's busy, year-round, live entertainment schedule.
