Bridgeton's History

When European colonists came to the Bridgeton area, it was inhabited by Native Lenni Lenape people. This area's proximity to rivers and ocean water has long made it an attractive area for human settlement, and as with many other parts of the U.S., the Lenni Lenape were eventually forced out of the area by white settlers. However, the Bridgeton area is home to a Lenni Lenape Cultural Center, helping preserve the culture of these native locals. The first white settlement in this area came relatively early when a sawmill was established in 1686, with early industry continuing to be a growing trend.
