Briarwood is sometimes confused for being its own independent city, but it is actually a neighborhood inside of the Queens borough of New York City. Briarwood can be found a bit northwest of the neighborhood of Jamaica, and it has a large and diverse community of many different ethnic groups. As of the year 2000, the population is 53,877 people, but the area is generally considered to have grown since the last official tally.
As a New York City borough, most of the Briarwood residents get around by use of the subway. Cars are used, but in general the New York City traffic can stifle commutes and make even small trips lengthy. Briarwood is serviced by the IND Queens Boulevard Line which uses the Briarwood-Van Wyck Boulevard station. Other ways of getting around in the community include using the extensive cab services offered by New York City.
