This city has furnished our country with quite a few notables, including a former Miss Florida USA (hey, what happened to her Mississippi pride?), a political scientist, and a professional football player. Not bad for a town of a scant 16,000 folks. Maybe Joe Turner, Brandon-born professional magician and talking head, can tell you the secret to Brandon's success. Then again, good luck getting a magician to confess what he knows, right?

The Lowdown On Brandon
Brandon ""officially"" harkens back to 1829, when the white settlers were able to make this sultry southern city the Rankin County, Mississippi seat. Before that point, there is abundant evidence that natives had made the area into a center of no small amount of prehistoric hustle and bustle. Any anthropologists among you, take heed, because more than fifty sites of importance to these pre-settler settlers have been discovered.
In the years intervening between the mid-19th century and today, Brandon witnessed the wrath of the Civil War (not something they're eager to talk about - General Sherman laid waste to the place), but has henceforth settled into its role as a small town in the deep south with a big ol' heart of gold.
Brandon's family friendly credentials are backed up by this statistic: 59% of its households consist of married couples. That's actually pretty high, believe it or not. The city's median income is above not only the national average, but the Mississippi average as well. When it comes the always obligatory schooling, Brandon is hard at work educating its kiddies at a total of 6 public schools, 3 of which are elementary (my dear). The Brandon Bulldogs are the one and only high school's mascot, and help inject a dose of self-esteem into a city that might otherwise go unnoticed at the southern end of ""flyover country.""
Gettin' Your Busy On In Brandon
Any discussion of what Brandon has to offer the activity-hunters in its midst must begin with Brandon Day. Yes, Brandon Day. This three day event held every May includes the usual lil' town stuff like food, crafts, and a local talent show, but the real action takes place on the third night, when a big(ger) name act drawn from the world outside Brandon lands on stage. Past entertainers have included Leanne Womack and Kenny Chesney. Now there's something to click your boot heels for.
Some other ways to cut loose include Lazer Park, where bloodless shootouts take place to the thrill of energetic youngsters. If you're of the mind that violence never solved anything - but a hole-in-one has - look into the slow-moving action to be had at the Bay Pointe Resort & Golf Club. If yet more golf is what your heart yearns for, you have all the opportunity in the world to lose your ball among the trees that meander through Castlewoods Country Club.
By this point you're likely to be hungry. That sensation can be remedied by a visit to Penn's Fish House, where fried gulf coast delicacies await your stomach acid.
Good for you. Bad for the butterfly shrimp.
