Preserving it All
With a population of only 3,924 as of the 2010 census, you might think it’d be hard for a city like Bordentown to get recognized. Well, you’d be wrong. It’s Bordentown’s small town vibe and spirit that has earned it accolades from the Classic Towns of Philadelphia organization, which honors communities that have preserved their history, their character and their main street charm. You can thank the Bordentown Historical Society and the city’s year round community events for that distinction. Bordentown is not only a city that preserves its history and heritage, but it also works hard to preserve its environment. It has been nominated both as a Tree City USA and Green Town USA. You can really appreciate the township’s efforts while spending time out in the Great Outdoors. It’s easy to do in Bordentown with its beautiful parks, playgrounds, trails, and open spaces.

Barton, who would later found the American Red Cross, moved to Bordentown with a friend and started the first free public schools in the state. The Bordentown Regional School District offers Peter Muschal Elementary School, MacFarland Intermediate School, Bordentown Regional Middle School, and Bordentown High School. St. Mary’s Elementary, a private Catholic school, offers Pre K through eighth grade. While you’re in town, don’t forget to visit Barton’s schoolhouse, which also serves as a museum. Just don’t forget to leave an apple on the desk… it happens to be Miss Barton’s original desk.
