Life in Billerica

Fun fact: this is the only town in America with the name, “Billerica.” Live here and be confident that your town name is unique.

The city also boasts some seriously rich history. This town is even in touch with their prehistoric history. Now that’s old. A Native American burial site dating back to 1000 BC is in the town. Plenty of haunted tales and ghost stories about this location, so check it out at your own paranormal risk! There are countless historical sites to explore. The Billerica Historical Society has been around since 1894 and works to preserve the town’s history and educate the public on its history and heritage. They take care of two historical sites that you can visit: the Howe School and the Clara Sexton House. On the National Registry of Historic Places, the Howe School was built in 1852 and functioned as a school continuously until 1915. The 300-year old Clara Sexton House has open houses and special events where you can visit and imagine what it was like to live in the 1700s. You can also get your history fix in by checking out the very awesome and extremely convincing Billerica Minute Men to see history come to life. In addition to portraying military men, they also demonstrate old school activities such as woodworking, pewtering, broom making, and musket ball casting. (I smell a new hobby!)

This is certainly not a town full of couch potatoes, these folks like to move. Sports Illustrated named Billerica one of the nation’s top 50 towns for sports and recreation and the “Sportstown for the Bay State.” Golfers can enjoy the game at the Country Club Billerica or Rangeway Golf. Rangeway also has a driving range and a mini golf course. Manning Park offers a great place to get outside and enjoy picnics, hikes, and some fresh New England air. Find your peace of mind at Nutting Lake. The beautiful, calm, location is home to swimmers, fishers, and boat-paddlers alike. No matter what your interests, your new apartment doesn’t have to be far from a good time.

The Great Brook Farm State Park is just a few minutes away in nearby Carlisle and it is well worth multiple visits. Yankee Magazine’s Travel Guide to New England chose it as an “Editor’s Pick” in 2000. They have it all here with a petting zoo and over 20 miles of trails to ski on in the winter and hike, bike, or horseback ride in the warmer months. They even have a lantern lit trail for moonlight trail experiences. Sweet! You can canoe and fish at the park or tour the barn and see the first robotic milking system in Massachusetts.

Sing Along

The city is known as the “Yankee Doodle Town” due to the belief that part of the song refers to one of Billerica’s residents back in the day, Thomas Ditson. The town celebrates their Yankee Doodle-ness every year with a weekend-long festival. Find your new apartment in this great city and you’ll be welcomed into an idyllic New England town that is rich with history, full of pride, and has a calendar filled with events, festivals, and outdoor activities to enjoy.
