This place really is an outdoorsman’s paradise. With the cascades not far away, you can take a drive up to see Sparks Lake, which is great for kayaking and fishing. There is also Smith Rock State Park, which covers more than 651 acres at 3,000 feet, and is great for day hiking and taking in spectacular views of the surrounding area. The Deschutes River is ideal for whitewater rafting and spectacular for trout fishing. There really is no end to the things you can do to get outside and enjoy nature’s backyard.
One of the most well-known features of the Pacific Northwest is all of their stellar microbreweries that dot the landscape. Bend is no exception, and their most famous destination is the Deschutes Brewery, best known for their dark brews and festive seasonal ales. Pop in for some pub food, like a burger or bratwurst, and enjoy what people call the best wings in town. It is a nice break from all the outdoors excitement you will probably be having here, and a great way to unwind with a cold one after a long day on the trail or slopes.
Dinner and a Show
After getting a good meal, residents and visitors may be in the mood to continue the night with some entertainment and possibly a show. The Les Schwab Amphitheater is the place to go if there are any concerts coming through town, and some of the greats like Coldplay, Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, and Jack Johnson have all performed there. Once you have a nice little buzz going from all the quality microbrews you have been drinking, head to the amphitheater for a show, but be sure to get your tickets early because they tend to sell out quick.
