With a population of around 18,000 people, Bay City balances small-town charm with big city opportunities. Back in 1894, David Swickheimer, a millionaire from the Enterprise Land and Colonizing Company, saw the beautiful Bay Prairie and decided that he just had to build a town there. With the help of G.M. Magill, N.M. Vogelsang, and Nicholas King, Swickheimer formed the Bay City Town Company. Later that year, Bay City was born out of just a dream and 640 acres of land. The Bay City Breeze, a local newspaper, was distributed to help promote the new community. Before long, people moved into town, many coming from across the Colorado River, on Elliott’s Ferry. Today, most people drive into Bay City, which has grown considerably since its humble beginnings as a glint in the eye of David Swickheimer.
