With a population of around 18,000 people, Bay City balances small-town charm with big city opportunities. This is a place where you won't get lost in the crowd or have to worry about constantly being under the eye of scrutinizing neighbors. Back in 1894, David Swickheimer, a millionaire from the Enterprise Land and Colonizing Company, saw the beautiful Bay Prairie and decided that he just had to build a town there. With the help of G.M. Magill, N.M. Vogelsang, and Nicholas King, Swickheimer formed the Bay City Town Company. Later that year, Bay City was born out of just a dream and 640 acres of land. The Bay City Breeze, a local newspaper, was distributed to help promote the new community. Before long, people moved into town, many coming from across the Colorado River, on Elliott’s Ferry. Today, most people drive into Bay City, which has grown considerably since its humble beginnings as a glint in the eye of David Swickheimer.
Bay City? More Like Bird City!
Bay City is located right under the Central Flyway Zone, a migratory path for quite a few species of birds. The Black Skimmer, the Snowy Egret, and the Roseate Spoonbill are three of the most commonly spotted birds, but you can see hundreds of different species from your new apartment in Bay City. Whether you're a bird watching fanatic with a life list a hundred pages long, or a newcomer to the joy of identifying birds by sight or song, you'll be an ornithological expert in no time. Just imagine: you're sitting in your new apartment, binoculars at the ready, when you spot a Black Skimmer gliding over the Colorado River. Or perhaps you've noticed a bird with pink plumage walking along the shore, dipping its beak into the muck to spoon up crustaceans. There sure is a wealth of wildlife to appreciate in this city. That may be why it's often referred to as The Gateway to the Great Outdoors.
A Trip to the Museum
If you're looking for something to do in Bay City, look no further than the Matagorda County Museum. This museum is a great place to visit if you're hoping to learn a little more about the history of Matagorda County and Bay City. It also has a fantastic children's museum with plenty of hands-on exhibits that are sure to get the kids excited about science and history. Just make sure that you visit the museum during the day. You don't want to be there at night–who knows what shenanigans the exhibits are up to after dark!
