"Battle Creek -- More Than Just a Cereal City
Battle Creek, which is the third-largest city in Michigan, after Grand Rapids and Detroit, has a rich history. In 1823 there was a skirmish between a few American land surveyors and a couple of Native Americans. The skirmish took place along a river that the Americans later named Battle Creek River–not the most creative name in the world, but it stuck nonetheless. When the first settlers came to the area in 1831, they adopted the name of the river as the name of their new hometown. The town of Battle Creek grew rapidly after the arrival of these brave settles. The first post office opened in 1832, the first school in 1834, the first sawmill in 1837, and the first brick manufacturing plant in 1840. All this industry attracted even more settlers to the area. Today, there are around 52,000 people who live in Battle Creek.
Let’s Celebrate Breakfast in a Big Way
If you ask Battle Creek's residents what their hometown is known for, they'll give you just one answer: cereal. In 1906, the Battle Creek Toasted Cornflake Company opened its doors and shipped out its first box of cereal. Never heard of this company? That's because it changed its name to Kellogg Company in 1922. Today, Kellogg's is still the city's number one employer. If you're a fan of breakfast (it is the most important meal of the day, you know), be sure to catch the Cereal Festival and the World’s Longest Breakfast Table. This is something you have to see to believe. Get settled into your new place before the summer so that you'll have a chance to chow down on Kellogg's cereals with all your neighbors. Of course, if you can't wait until June for breakfast, you can invite the neighbors over for a bowl of cereal any time of the year. What a great way to celebrate your arrival in Battle Creek!
The Beauty of Battle Creek at Night
If you think that Battle Creek sounds like an early-to-bed and early-to-rise kind of place, think again. From November 22 to December 31, be sure to journey outside after dark to see the International Festival of Lights. Each year, the people of Battle Creek string up their holiday lights and decorate their town so that it shines. Head downtown and you'll see lights adorning every building, lamp post, and tree. What a beautiful sight! When the lights come down after New Year's Day, you'll still be able to enjoy the downtown area. Grab a few friends or neighbors and head out for a great meal or a night of painting the town red. However you look at it, Battle Creek is a great city to call home!"
