Alabama Veterans Muse

Named Attraction of the Year in 2009 by the Alabama Mountain Lakes Tourist Association, the Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives is a great place to get a taste of military history, especially as it relates the area. Since its opening in 2000, this museum has been dedicated to showing the sacrifices and accomplishments of the service people involved in military action since the Civil War. It takes pride in focusing on the people on the front line, rather than just glorifying their leaders. The museum also participates in community activities, including honoring lost service men and retiring flags properly in ceremony.

Swan Creek Greenway N

Come bask in the beautiful outdoors at the Swan Creek Greenway National Recreational Trail. Enjoy over two miles of picturesque views, including wildlife, rapids, and pools in the area. Deer, foxes, and chipmunks are known to peek out at you as you explore this charming territory. After you have explored the trail, head over to the recreational facilities at Swan Creek Park and the City’s Sportsplex. Enjoy soccer, baseball, or just go for a swim. Also available are picnic tables, playgrounds, and tennis courts. This area provides everything a family needs for a great day out in the sunshine.

306 BBQ

Let your mouth delight on mouthwatering meat and sauces at locals’ favorite restaurant joint, 306 BBQ. This establishment has been serving up authentic pit-smoked and slow-cooked barbecue since 2011. A family-owned and operated restaurant, they are dedicated only to the highest in quality, smoking everything slowly with hickory rub and using a dry rub on the meats prior to cooking them. Their homemade sauces are the frosting on the cake. Residents of Athens love the food here so much that they go to 306 BBQ regularly, and plenty have said that it is the best barbecue in the area.
