A Different Kind of ‘Big Apple’
Sure, New York City may be known as the Big Apple, but Appleton, Wisconsin, would give the City that Never Sleeps a run for its money–at least when it comes to having a caring community, beautiful city streets, and gorgeous views of a pristine river. (NYC apartments may come with views of the Hudson but that river is anything but "pristine". Appleton is located 100 miles north of Milwaukee, on the Fox River, in three different counties: Calument, Outagamie, and Winnebago. With a population of just under 80,000 people, Appleton also has plenty of friendly neighbors for you to get to know.
The History behind Appleton
Appleton began as an outpost for fur traders who came west to barter for skins with the Fox River Valley tribe. Fur was such a hot commodity in the 1830s that many people moved to the area, hoping to strike it rich. One man, Hippolyte Grignon, built the White Heron Inn, an establishment that helped make it easier for newcomers to settle in this part of Wisconsin. Appleton, which was named for another early settler by the name of Samuel Appleton, was founded a short time later, in 1847.
Visiting the Hearthstone House
A lot has changed in town since the 1800s, but you can still visit some of its first buildings. The Hearthstone House, a four-story mansion that was built in 1881, is one historic building that you won't want to miss. This was the first house ever to be powered by hydroelectricity. The building is in great condition and is a fascinating example of early green technology.
A Day at the Park
If you like getting outside to enjoy the sunshine and fresh air, you'll love living in Appleton. This town loves its parks. There are 24 small, neighborhood parks in town, and 4 large, community parks. No matter where you live, you're sure to have a park within walking distance of your apartment. Head to the neighborhood parks to picnic with friends and family or to let the kids play on the jungle gyms, slides, and swings. If you're in the mood for a quiet stroll through the woods, a day of fishing for trout or bass, or a game of soccer or softball, you'll want to visit one of the larger, community parks. History buffs should also be sure to make it out to City Park, which was Appleton's first public park. It was set aside all the way back in 1882 and is one of the most popular parks in town.
Good Eats
After a day of unpacking boxes, learning about your new hometown's history, and meeting the neighbors, you're bound to be hungry. All you have to do is make your way down to the river, where you’ll find the prestigious Fratellos Waterfront. This area serves as a sort of "Restaurant Row", and is home to excellent eateries that you'll want to visit again and again. And since you've rented yourself a new apartment in Appleton (you have, haven't you?), you'll be able to dine here whenever you'd like. You're going to have a great new life in this radiant riverfront community.
