Appleton, WI

show info

Sure, New York City may be known as the Big Apple, but Appleton, Wisconsin, would give the City that Never Sleeps a run for its money; at least when it comes to having a caring community, beautiful city streets, and gorgeous views of a pristine river. (NYC apartments may come with views of the Hudson but that river is anything but \pristine.\) Appleton is located 100 miles north of Milwaukee, on the Fox River, in three different counties: Calument, Outagamie, and Winnebago. With a population of just under 80,000 people, Appleton also has plenty of friendly neighbors for you to get to know.

The History Behind Appleton

Appleton began as an outpost for fur traders who came west to barter for skins with the Fox River Valley tribe. Fur was such a hot commodity in the 1830s that many people moved to the area, hoping to strike it rich. One man, Hippolyte Grignon, built the White Heron Inn, an establishment that helped make it easier for newcomers to settle in this part of Wisconsin. Appleton, which was named for another early settler by the name of Samuel Appleton, was founded a short time later, in 1847.

If you're in the mood for a quiet stroll through the woods, a day of fishing for trout or bass, or a game of soccer or softball, you'll want to visit one of the larger, community parks. History buffs should also be sure to make it out to City Park, which was Appleton's first public park. It was set aside all the way back in 1882 and is one of the most popular parks in town.
