ABOUT AUSTIN & AUSTIN APARTMENT RENTALS

Austin is a unique, progressive, culturally exciting place to live and work – the capital of Texas that is so different from other Texan cities.  Austin’s official slogan promotes itself as “The Live Music Capital of the World,” referring to its many musicians and music venues.  Its unofficial slogan as of recent years is “Keep Austin Weird” – referring both to the eclectic lifestyles of many of its residents, as well as to keeping local businesses alive in the face of commercialization.

AUSTIN ATTRACTIONS

The Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum and the Lyndon Baines Johnson National Historic Park in nearby Johnson City pay homage to President Johnson, a native Texan.  Austin museums include the Texas Memorial Museum and the Blanton Museum of Art.  Other must-sees are the Texas State Capitol, the Governor’s Mansion, the Warehouse Entertainment District, and the scenic Colorado River.  For an unusual treat, visit the Congress Avenue Bridge, which houses the world’s largest urban population of Mexican free-tailed bats (up to 1.5 million) during certain months of the year.  Around sunset, the bats emerge in search of insects.  Both locals and tourists gather to watch this astounding affair!

Austin has lively farmer’s markets that are open seven days a week, with fresh produce, fish, baked goods and live music.  Austin is also home to a lot of artists who sell their art at the Renaissance market.  Every first Thursday of the month – called First Thursdays – the unique shops on South Congress stay open late, artists sell their work on the sidewalks, and musicians play in the streets.

AUSTIN DINING

Austin’s dining is as delicious and varied as its musical scene.  Try corn dog shrimp or horseradish-crusted salmon at the Moonshine Patio and Grill, a comfortable 1860s house with candlelit windows, oversized mirrors and distinctive artwork housed in exposed brick walls.  Behind the main house sits a carriage house-turned-bar amid the trees.  The Driskill Grill offers pan-roasted duck breast with apple-raisin hollandaise and pistachio-crusted sea scallops with a truffled herb salad.  Or, for something simpler, P. Terry’s Burger Stand makes French fries from scratch and thick and creamy milkshakes.

AUSTIN NIGHTLIFE

It is Austin’s nightlife that is the real draw for many of its visitors.  Once known mostly for its country and blues music, today Austin's music scene is incredibly diverse, and centers around the many nightclubs on 6th Street.  Check out the Dizzy Rooster for your brew of choice from over 50 varieties, and live music from local emerging artists.  Antone’s Nightclub is Austin’s home of the blues, founded by bluesman Clifford Antone, and now offers a wide variety of other musical genres as well.  If you’re looking for a night of theater instead, try Esther’s Follies or the Zachary Scott Theatre Center for timely and inspired performances.
