ABOUT COLUMBIA & COLUMBIA APARTMENT RENTALS
Columbia lies at the confluence of three rivers just downstream from a 50,000-acre recreational lake. The city enjoys more than 300 days of sunshine per year, and has fascinating historical and cultural attractions, a world-class zoo, outdoor recreation, festivals, parks and sporting events.
COLUMBIA ATTRACTIONS
Finlay Park is one of the best known parks in the state of South Carolina. It is across the street from the Governor's Mansion and has one of the most photographed views of downtown. South Carolinians spend a lot of time in Finlay Park, enjoying festivals, political rallies, road races, and Easter services.
Check out the Columbia Canal, originally constructed between 1819 and 1824. In addition to the canal's importance as a source of water and electricity, the canal offers visitors a unique recreational facility with walking, jogging, bicycling, picnicking, and fishing.
Sesquicentennial State Park, known locally as "Sesqui," is located 13 miles northeast of downtown Columbia. The park is situated in the Sandhills region of South Carolina. Over a million years ago, the ocean extended as far inland as Aiken, Columbia, and Chesterfield in South Carolina. The Sandhills are a result of the receding and returning of the ocean four times across this area. Once a series of rolling dunes, the Sandhills are now covered by pines and scrub oak.
The 87-site camping area is located away from the activity areas in a pine forest. There’s a four-mile jogging trail and an exercise course. During the summer months, the lake swimming area, pedal boat, and canoe rentals are popular. Also, there is a year-round naturalist program and fishing in the park lake. Two nature trails offer opportunities to enjoy the natural features of the park.
Lake Murray was constructed between 1927 and 1930. The Dreher Shoals Dam formed a 50,000 acre lake in the heart of South Carolina and only a short drive from downtown Columbia. The lake covers 78 square miles with 649 miles of shoreline, where people enjoy boating, sailing, canoeing, fishing, skiing, swimming, camping and just plain fun at one of the South's most scenic playgrounds.
COLUMBIA DINING
The south always means good eating and Columbia is no exception. Saluda’s offers fine dining at its best with dishes like seared foie gras and fried green tomato. WG's Chicken Wings is the home of award winning buffalo wings with 20 flavors. Hennessy’s is another of Columbia’s fine dining establishments featuring dishes like crab stuffed portabella and coconut shrimp.
COLUMBIA NIGHTLIFE
Jungle Jim is a raucous place with a good atmosphere and loud music to dance to, while the Knock Knock Club is the place for the Greek crowd from the University of South Carolina. Delaney’s Music Pub and Eatery is a good spot for live music and the Blue Martini is a nice place to go for a more mellow night with a slightly older crowd. Salsa Cabana is only open on Friday and Saturday nights, but it is the best place to dance salsa, merengue and everything else Latin.
