ABOUT NEW YORK & NY APARTMENT RENTALS
A city defined by its culture, commerce, ethnic and international diversity, shopping, food, nightlife, and more, New York is a small island of under 24 square miles. Explore its crowded streets and you will find that it’s a place which literally pulses with energy and excitement. Immortalized in songs, movies, television shows, books, plays, and more, New York just might truly live up to its name as the “Greatest City on Earth.”
NEW YORK ATTRACTIONS
New York is best explored by foot. Walk through Wall Street, financial capital of the country; the 9/11 Memorial; Chinatown; Little Italy; Greenwich Village; Broadway; Times Square; the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Museum of Modern Art; Carnegie Hall; Central Park; and the Museum of Natural History. For some different perspectives, take a cruise around Manhattan, view the magnificent Manhattan skyline from the promenade in Brooklyn Heights, or visit the top of the towering Empire State Building.
New York is a world trendsetter, and even its street names carry meanings: Broadway means live theater; Wall Street means money; Seventh Avenue means fashion; Madison Avenue means advertising; and Fifth Avenue means elegance, sophistication and some of the finest shopping in the world.
New York is an arts capital, and offers innumerable plays and musicals both on Broadway and off-Broadway (and off-off-Broadway). Catch a show at the Radio City Music Hall or Carnegie Hall, visit art exhibits at countless museums and galleries throughout the city, or watch an exquisite Alvin Ailey dance performance.
New York is also a never-ending parade of festivals celebrating its rich ethnic diversity, like the St. Patrick’s Day and Puerto Rican Day Parades on Fifth Avenue and the various Italian holidays honoring patron saints. Winter celebrations include the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and the famous New Year’s Eve party in Times Square. Meander through Central Park in the summer and you are sure to come upon various free dance, music, theater, and art happenings.
NEW YORK DINING
When it comes to food, like so many other things, New York is generally acknowledged to be the nation’s master. Whether you want high-end gourmet cuisine, ethnic food of all varieties, or good old-fashioned diner food, New York is the place you can find it all – Greek, Mediterranean, Jewish, Chinese, Italian, American, and more.
New York is famous for its pizza. Whether you like thin sliced, traditional pizza or thick crust Sicilian style, people come from all over the city to Mama Leone’s in Manhattan. With a large influx of Chinese people over the last couple of decades, New York has developed at least four new Chinatowns in addition to the original Chinatown in lower Manhattan, all with authentic Chinese restaurants. For Italian food, try Umberto’s Clam House and Ferarra’s Bakery in Little Italy/Greenwich Village. For soul food, there’s Virgil’s Real BBQ or you can go a bit further uptown and try Sylvia’s. Finally, no trip to New York would be complete without a trip to the Carnegie or Stage Delis in Manhattan.
NEW YORK NIGHTLIFE
New York is also famous for its nightlife, which often doesn’t end until the next morning. Up for some music? Check out live jazz at the famous Blue Note or St. Nick’s Pub. Want to dance? Head over to 13Bar/Lounge, a three floor lounge/nightclub with DJs, live eclectic jazz or funk, or spoken word, depending on the night. Try Copacabana for the best in live Latin music, or Exit for hip hop, techno, R&B, or house. Or make your way to One51, a supper club in a 1920’s opera house, which features dancing four nights a week, or to the Sound Factory for progressive house music. Whatever you’re looking for, New York is sure to have it!
