ABOUT DETROIT & DETROIT APARTMENT RENTALS
Detroit: Motor City, home to the Lions and Tigers, right across the river from Canada, and the automotive capital of the world. America may be losing its grip as the world’s top automaker, but that doesn’t mean Detroit is slowing down.
DETROIT ATTRACTIONS
Any visit to Detroit must include a visit to the Ren Center, the steel and glass centerpiece of the new downtown, a combination of offices, shopping and housing with fine shops and incredible views of the Detroit River.
Bell Isle Park is located right in the middle of the Detroit River and is one of Detroit’s most attractive features. Accessible by bridge, this 1,000-acre island park features a zoo, aquarium, conservatory, Great Lakes museum and plenty of room to hike, barbecue, watch boats, bicycle and more.
No visit to Detroit would be complete without a visit to the North American International Auto Show in January to see the auto industry’s future, or the Henry Ford Museum, to see its past. Plus, there are many ethnic and cultural festivals during the year, such as the Detroit Festival of the Arts in June.
DETROIT DINING
The Caucus Club has been the place for steaks for more than 50 years. The food and the atmosphere alone would make it a Detroit landmark, but another claim to fame is that Barbra Streisand entertained here more than 40 years ago when she was an up and coming singer. Cobo Joe’s Sports Bar & Grill is another Detroit institution, where Detroit Redwings fans love to go before games for good doses of solid tavern-style food and plenty of beer. Opus One is another of Detroit’s fine dining establishments, featuring delicacies like shrimp helene and beignets of duck. Pegasus offers Greek treats such as Saganaki – kasseri cheese set aflame tableside to shouts of “Opa!” For something quick and easy, try American Coney Island or Lafayette Coney Island (located next to each other!) for a classic Motown Coney hot dog.
DETROIT NIGHT LIFE
Detroit has a varied and lively night life starting with the Attic Bar where you can hear good old-fashioned Detroit Blues, along with an occasional spattering of rock or rap and over 100 different beers, while Menjo’s is the place for high energy dance music. The Majestic, known largely for reggae, is a complex including concert space, bowling and pool. The Magic Stick is the pool component of the Majestic complex and has also become one of Detroit’s premier places for underground rock. The Royal Oak Music Theater can accommodate up to 2,000 people for concerts with first class lighting and sound. It’s also a popular dance club and live music spot, while Clutch Cargo’s holds about 1,200 people on a regular basis to see bands like Third Eye Blind, Less Than Jake, Guster and the White Stripes.
