ABOUT SAN FRANCISCO & SF APARTMENT RENTALS

San Francisco has been called the “Paris of the West” because of its glamour and sophistication, and rightfully so – it is arguably one of the most beautiful cities in the nation and the world.

SAN FRANCISCO ATTRACTIONS

Exciting, diverse, romantic, artsy, technological, historical, and totally unexpected – San Francisco is all of this and more.

Ride a cable car on one of San Francisco’s famously steep hills and pass through some of the renowned attractions in San Francisco -- Chinatown, Nob Hill, and Fisherman’s Wharf.  Take a ferry to visit Alcatraz, a former prison on an island in the bay.  See Coit Tower on Telegraph Hill and the “Painted Ladies” on Alamo Square – a series of Victorian homes with the San Francisco skyline in the background, made famous on many postcards.  Walk along the world famous Golden Gate Bridge, one of the world’s greatest suspension bridges and a San Francisco landmark.  Gaze at the changing formations of the creeping fog.

Visit one of San Francisco’s diverse and happening neighborhoods: Union Square is the primary shopping and hotel district; the Financial District is the business center; North Beach is San Francisco’s own “Little Italy”; the historic Mission District is home to the city’s vibrant Hispanic culture; the Haight Ashbury district and Golden Gate Park birthed the hippie movement of the 1960’s and the “Summer of Love”; the Castro District is home to San Francisco’s exuberant gay culture; and Japantown and the two Chinatowns display two of the many distinct Asian cultures that reside in san Francisco.

San Francisco has many community celebrations, including: the Chinese New Years Festival and Parade in March; the Bay to Breakers in May, the world’s most colorful and imaginative footrace, as much a party as an athletic contest; Brazilian Carnaval, a two day Memorial Day weekend celebration; the San Francisco Gay Pride parade in June; and Fleet Week in October, featuring the famous Blue Angels precision flight team.

See a play at the American Conservatory Theatre, a Tony Award-winning professional repertory theater company, or a Broadway show in the Theater District.  Or catch a comedy improv show at BATS Improv or Killing My Lobster.

SAN FRANCISCO DINING

From steam beer to sourdough bread to Ghirardelli chocolates, you can’t talk about San Francisco without talking about food.

At the northern tip of the city, there is a variety of fine Italian and other restaurants to choose from at Fisherman’s Wharf, including Alioto’s (run by cousins of the famous ex-Mayor Joseph Alioto) and Castagnola’s.  Drive out to the western edge for fine dining and incomparable views at the Cliff House, next to the Pacific Ocean.  For Mexican food, try Taqueria Zapata, Olivia’s Brunch Restaurant, or any of the many other places scattered throughout the Mission district.  There’s also a hip, creative dining scene, with places like Foreign Cinema, specializing in an acclaimed mix of California-Mediterranean cuisine, while simultaneously projecting foreign and independent films.   Like many other San Francisco restaurants with fresh produce, the Universal Café focuses on local, seasonal foods with a daily menu.  For authentic Chinese food, the Chinatown near the Financial District has such local San Francisco favorites as the Golden Pagoda and King Tin.  For a bit of San Francisco lore, try John’s Grill downtown, featured in the novel, The Maltese Falcon.  Or try Café Tosca or the Washington Square Bar and Grill to mingle with the political and social elite of San Francisco.

SAN FRANCISCO NIGHTLIFE

Many musical legends originated in San Francisco, including The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Santana, Sly, and Digital Underground.  There are still ground-breaking shows at the world-famous Fillmore Auditorium and at the Cow Palace.  In addition, there are dozens of bars and clubs featuring the best new and upcoming local bands in more intimate settings, like the Hotel Utah, the Great American Music Hall, Slim’s, and the Bottom of The Hill.  You can also check out the San Francisco Jazz Preservation District to hear some fine jazz, or head down to the Mission for some hot salsa at clubs like Café Cocomo and El Rio.  For DJ and house music, there’s the Element Lounge, the DNA Lounge, Ruby Skye and more.
