On the Fence

Adrian was founded in 1826 by Addison Comstock. Addison named it “Logan” but in 1828 his wife decided to change the name. She named it “Adrian” after the Roman Emperor “Hadrian.” Wonder how hubby felt about that? Back in the day Adrian was known as the “fence capital of the world” because one of its crafty residents invented the first successful wire fence. Adrian’s fences were shipped all over the globe to places like Berlin, Asia, and Africa.

Spooky Race

Adrian’s Parks and Recreation Department hosts an annual one-of-a-kind race. The “Haunted Graveyard 5K Run” encourages runners to come in costume and awards prizes to the funniest, scariest, and most creative costumes. Runners must have more than stamina to complete the race – no scaredy cats allowed here. They run the 5K through Oakwood Cemetery. Ooooooooo! Oakwood Cemetery has been around since 1848 so it is definitely a creepy air about it – plus, didn’t we mention? It’s a cemetery. The cemetery 120 acres and was designated a Historic Site by the Michigan Historical Society on its 150th birthday. Happy Birthday, cemetery.

Mi Mi Mi Mi

One of the oldest continuously running theaters in the United States is in Adrian. The Croswell Opera House is a Michigan Historic Site and on the National Register of Historic Places. The theater was built in the 1860s and was turned into a movie theater in 1921. In 1976 the Fine Arts Association renovated and expanded it into the current art gallery, offices, and rehearsal spaces. Today the beautifully restored, lavish theater presents musicals, plays, and concerts.

110 Trombones

Not quite 110 trombones, but the Adrian City Band and its forty-some odd members has the spirit and perseverance of thousands. This community band is the oldest continuously playing band in the country. They’ve been getting people stomping and singing since 1836! The Adrian City Band plays free family-friendly concerts of traditional band music, some classical transcriptions, and new music written for wind ensembles. Once you settle into your new apartment, join the band or, if you’re not a “joiner,” go and watch them play in Trestle Park.

Memorial

The Civil War Memorial is a marble monument that stands in the middle of Memorial Park. The monument is on the National Register of Historic Places and was unveiled in 1870 by the Adrian Soldiers’ Monument Association to honor soldiers from Adrian who died in the Civil War. The names of the 84 fallen soldiers are inscribed on bronze tablets on each side of the monument. The base of the monument reads, “1870. Erected by citizens of Adrian in memory of our fallen soldiers. By such as these was our Union saved in the great struggle of 1861-1865.”
