The tallest lighthouse in New Jersey (and one of the oldest in the country) stands tall in Atlantic City. The Absecon Lighthouse, one of the oldest lighthouses in the country, was first lit in 1857. Walk 228 steps up to the top of this restored piece of history and take in the stunning view of the Atlantic City skyline. The lighthouse offers group tours and many cool programs like the overnight “Keep Sleeper” and the “Full Moon Climbs.” A history museum is located in the Keeper’s House where you can check out many interesting exhibits and memorabilia including photos from the 1800s and an original oil can. (How many opportunities to get to see one of those?) When visiting this historical site be warned: some believe it haunted. Since 1905 there have been reports of ghosts and other paranormal activities like the smell of pipe and cigar smoke and strange sounds. Sounds reported include footsteps, doors opening and closing, and eerie laughter. Mwah-ha-ha-ha-ha.
