Moving and Grooving Outdoors in Abington

Abington gives residents plenty of opportunities to get outside and enjoy the great Massachusetts outdoors. Come listen to the melodious sounds of Abington’s fabulous Ames Nowell State Park , an overwhelming 700 acres and open year-round. The park is centered around Cleveland Pond where folks are always having a rocking good time. Many residents enjoy canoeing (motor-free boating, so it’s nice and quiet) and fishing at this man-made pond. There are also picnic areas, a ball field, and miles of trails for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing in the winter. Hit the gorgeous Island Grove Park for more summer fun. The park is surrounded by the enticing Island Grove Pond so visitors can enjoy both water and land activities. Enjoy the shade of big pine trees or go for a swim in the sand bottom swimming pool. Sign the family up for swimming lessons, buy an annual membership, or just go for the day. Picnic areas with charcoal grills are available, there are swing sets for the kids (or the young-at-heart), bathrooms, a snack shack, walking trails, fishing, and a gazebo. There is so much to do! Island Grove Park is also home to the “Eager Beaver” summer day camp.

Beyond the Beauty

It is worth noting that from the 1840s up until the Civil War, Island Grove Park was THE place for anti-slavery rallies. Crowds met and gathered here to listen to speakers. A monument sits beneath the trees where the speaker’s platform used to be. Renting an apartment here means ownership of a age-old American patriotism.

Lovely Libraries

Abington has had public library service since 1878. (That’s a LOT of reading.) The public library provides the community with programs for all ages from toddlers to seniors including “Toddler Time” with short stories, rhymes, and songs, “Story Hour” with stories, songs, and crafts, The Dyer Memorial Library was founded in 1930 and resides in the old Dyer mansion. (The mansion was left to the people in the will of the kind-hearted Marietta Dyer. Nice gift!) The library is open and free to the public and it is fully funded by trust fund donations. This incredible joint requires absolutely no government funding. Its focus is on local histories with a concentration of materials on people connected to Old Abington, which consisted of Abington, Rockland, and Whitman. The library hosts the Historical Society of Old Abington whose collections are housed throughout the building.

Fa La La La La

You’ll feel all warm and toasty with holiday spirit attending The Olde Town Christmas House Tour. A committee works all year to plan this annual tour of decorated homes in Abington. The homes featured cover a wide spectrum of architecture and style with some dating back to the 1700s. Each house on the tour is fully decked out with lavish holiday decorations to get everyone in that Dickens-like spirit. You’ll definitely need some hot cocoa and cozy chair near a fireplace after this one.

The Foot Biz

During the 19th century through the beginning of the 20th century shoes were Abington’s main gig. The prime industry in this town was making shoes and boots. Abington made the footwear for about half the Union Army during the Civil War. That’s a lot of feet covered. "
