Old Pee Dee Road
The Malcolm Blue Farm is worth a visit if only so that you can say that you went down the old Pee Dee Road. (Okay, it’s now called Bethesda Road, but it will make you seem like an old Aberdeen pro to refer to it as Pee Dee. Plus, you get to say “Pee Dee.” Come on. You know you want to.) This 1825 farmhouse and museum allows visitors a peak into what life was like for pioneers. Remember? No wifi, no cell phones, no flushable toilets. You’ll enjoy the magical shade of 100 year old Darlington oaks as you peruse the barns and grounds of the 7.5 acre farm. For an extra treat visit during one of their three special annual events: the Bluegrass Festival, the Malcolm Blue Historical Craft and Farmskills Festival, or the Early American Christmas celebration.
Artsy Aberdeen
A group of artists started the Artists League in the 1990s so that local artists could pursue their art. Set up in their funky building, an old railroad storage terminal given to them by the city, the league now has over 200 members and hosts classes and workshops ranging from oil and acrylic to watercolor and mixed media. They converted the super cool space into studio space for artists, two large classrooms, two galleries, and a library. The galleries are open for public viewing.
Fresh Air
Get outside and enjoy some of Aberdeen’s local parks. The Aberdeen Lake Park has a beautiful two-mile lake trail for walking and running and a very awesome train-themed playground for the kids. They also have shelter for picnics and the lake offers boating (no gas engines) and fishing. When kids are ready for another themed park, head to Colonial Heights Park and check out their tree house-themed playground. Colonial Heights also has baseball fields, a sand volleyball court, and five acres of wide-open park space for all your picnicking, frolicking, and fresh air needs. Sharpe Park is a bit more intimate with a playground for kids, picnic shelter, and picnic tables.
Golfers Paradise
Moore County is home to 43 of the best golf courses in North Carolina, and they are all within fifteen miles of each other. Golf Digest has rated over half of the courses with four or more stars. The nearby breathtaking Pinehurst is ranked as one of the top courses and has been around since 1895. Golf World rated Legacy Golf Course as one of the top 50 public courses. Many of the golf courses offer family deals where kids can play for free - the perfect opportunity to get Junior started on enjoying a lifetime of golf.
Good Old Choo Choo
You can feel Aberdeen’s rich, railroad history in the air. The United Station Railroad Museum in Aberdeen preserves the Union Station Depot, built in 1900. The station was designed by T.B. Creel, features stunning Victorian architecture, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum has artifacts and memorabilia from the community, the Aberdeen and Rockfish Railroad Company, and other railroads that have passed through the surrounding areas on display for all to enjoy. They have one of the only two inspection cars left in the country along with a renovated caboose for viewing. And admission is free!
