The Royal Ripkens
In Aberdeen folks like to call the Ripkens “baseball’s unofficial first family.” Calvin Edwin “Cal” Ripken Junior was born and raised in Aberdeen and residents are happy to tell you all about it. His father, Cal Senior, was a long-time baseball coach and managed the Orioles in the late 1980s. There is plenty to remind residents of the Ripkens’ life in Aberdeen.
The Ripken Family Museum
This lovely, small, nonprofit museum resides in the former Aberdeen town hall and is jam-packed with fascinating memorabilia from the Ripken family. The life size bronze statue of Cal Ripken Junior welcomes visitors to the museum. Beyond the baseballs and bats, the museum captures the spirit of this loyal, dedicated, family and gives us that nostalgic feeling about baseball’s glory days. Leaving the museum, you will most likely feel compelled to go watch a live baseball game and try and recapture that peanuts-and-cracker-jack feeling. The nearby Camden Yards is just the place to do it.
For Future Ripkens
Young baseball and softball players can live the dream at the Ripken Youth Academy. Home of youth camps and tournaments, the academy includes incredible youth-sized versions of world famous parks like Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Wrigley Field, Fenway Park, and Memorial Stadium. They even have a diamond replicating the old Yankee Stadium. How cool is that? They have everything a young baseball player could want –things like professional grade batting cages, softball fields, bullpen with pitching mounds, and concession. Baseball fans of all ages will never want to leave.
Military Pride
The United States Army’s Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG) is the oldest active proving ground in the United States and has been operating since 1918. Serving as headquarters to the Army Test and Evaluation Command (ATEC), the APG occupies more than 72,500 acres. There are plenty of job opportunities here at the Proving Ground. More than 7,500 civilians and 5,000 military personnel currently work at APG. The United States Army Odnance Museum has been open to the public since 1924 and holds one of the largest collections of combat vehicles, artillery, small arms, ammunition and military material in the world. Their main focus is historically important equipment and they have artillery and tanks from all over the world including German, French, and British World War II tanks, Italian tank destroyers, and a variety of Japanese and Soviet tanks from World War II. Some of the tanks on view have the sides removed so lucky visitors can get an inside look. Artillery on display includes the US M64 Atomic Cannon, the German Krup K5 Railway gun, and the Soviet 152mm Howitzer gun. The museum’s most cherished piece is a T12, the largest conventional bomb ever built. But don’t be fooled—renting in Aberdeen is still a remarkably peaceful experience.
