Abbeville, founded in 1850 in the parish of Vermillion, sits in the southwestern part of Louisiana near the coast and isn’t afraid to flaunt it Cajun roots. This unique bilingual city enjoys beautiful tree lined bayous, farmlands, and family festivals, and embraces its diversity and culture. Cajun to the Core

You can also check out the many fascinating historical sites like Steen’s Cane Syrup Mill, the Riviana Rice Mill, and the 100 year old Saint Mary Magdalene Catholic Church. From crawfish to cornbread, you will enjoy some of the best (and most authentic) Cajun food around.

Friendship in a Giant Omelette

Egg lovers rejoice in Abbeville! The world’s largest omelet (made with a whopping 5,000 eggs) is made and shared at the annual Giant Omelette Celebration. This annual festival hosts a 2-day arts and crafts show that takes place in Magdaline Square amongst the gorgeous oaks and old fashion gazebo. There is also an egg cracking contest, live music, antique car display, and other festivities. Of course, front and center is the intense preparation that goes into making the massive omelet. Everyone can watch as the chefs whip up the colossal thing; once it’s ready, everyone gets a slice. With 5,000 eggs there is plenty for everyone to enjoy. Sharing the omelet is actually what the festival is all about.

Thanks, Napoleon

Why all this hoopla over eggs anyway? Back in the day, in France, Napoleon took a break in a small town and feasted on an omelette that made him so happy he ordered the townspeople to round up all the eggs they could find and make a huge omelet for his army the next day. Sure, Napoleon was a little demanding, but instead of the act becoming a symbol of his ‘tude, the omelet became a symbol of fraternity, friendship and cultural exchange called “Confrerie.” So what does it have to do with Abbeville? In 1984 some members of the Chamber of Commerce went to the Omelette Festival in France and were knighted the first of Abbeville’s Chevaliers. They came home feeling quite in touch with their French heritage and decided to bring Abbeville closer to its. So they hosted the Omelette Festival. The festival is actually an international festival with seven cities all over the world celebrating annually. Chefs from other countries actually come and help cook the delicious giant omelette that is then shared with everyone who attends the event. Thanks, Napoleon!

Partying in the Name of Cows

Every year in October the Louisiana Cattle Festival rips and roars in Abbeville. This festival has been around since 1949 and used to be called the Dairy Festival. (The name was changed to honor all the cattle farmers in the state.) You never know who you’ll see there. Harry Truman actually showed up once (although I wouldn’t hold my breath for a reappearance of him). The three day festival is chock full of fun and activities including a cooking contest, queen’s pageant, cattle livestock show, a parade, street fair, live entertainment, and plenty of dancing “fais do do.” (Townie Vocab Alert: Fais do do is basically a happening Cajun dance party.) Of course, no festival in Abbeville would be complete without plenty of delicious Cajun food and drink. This town certainly knows how to enjoy life.
