Establish a Timeline for Your Apartment Search

Moving is one of the more stressful things that you will have to undertake in your life. Unfortunately, you can’t put the rest of your life on hold when you are searching for an apartment. For this reason, it is important to get yourself organized as quickly as possible and make sure that you have taken into account everything that finding and moving into a new apartment will require.

Ideally, you will want to give yourself between 1-2 months for your apartment search and move. There is a lot that goes into finding an apartment for rent and you want to give yourself the best opportunity to get your ideal apartment rental.

  • Week 1: Make a list of your necessities (commuting ease, pet-friendly, etc.) and amenities (laundry, parking, pool, etc.) and compare the listings in your desired area to your budget.
  • Week 2: Determine which locations are most favorable and compare rental rates with your list of wants and needs. Do some research on the neighborhoods and areas that you are interested in to ensure that it will be a good fit.
  • Week 3-4: Time to hit the street. Expect to devote at least some time each day to looking at rental units, meeting landlords and checking out locations.
  • Week 5-6: Get ready to move. Make arrangements for moving all your personal belongings and furniture. Walk through your apartment with your old landlord so that you can get your security deposit back and review your rental agreement with your new landlord.

Your apartment search will be much easier if you have planned on looking for new apartment rather than being forced to try to find a rental after a relocation, a new job or other circumstances that can necessitate moving.

Most landlords can be accommodating, but getting stuck with a week or even a few days in between moving out of your old apartment and moving into your new one can be extremely inconvenient.

You definitely do not want to delay your search to the point that you are forced to spend an additional month at either your old place, or a friend’s couch or at a hotel.

    I am a disabled woman with 2 small dogs. Finding it very difficult in finding a place in San Diego, CA. area.

    A year and a half ago, I became a widow. My husband and I were married for 23 years. We also have 3 now grown daughters. I have to say my life has changed completely, to say the least. Going from a family to just myself ,and my 2 1/2 yr old tea cup Chihuahua has been something to get used to. I am happy to say that I have gotten used to it and I am happy. Now if I can find an apartment for just my dog and I, I will be set. I am on SSI disability which is $693.00 on the first of every month. An apartment with one bedroom, or a studio that includes utilities would be awesome. I can set it up to where my check comes directly to you so it’s paid on time all the time. When I lost my husband, I slowly lost everything we had accumulated during the 23 years. I have seen a side of people that I’d rather never see again. I keep to myself, am a clean person, and my dog is house broken. I need a place asap…. If you have anything please call me.     Teacup puppies need extra care and attention. They are tiny and fragile. If dropped or stepped on they could easily be killed.

    NO SUCH THING AS TEACUP in maltese breed, if so then your buying a ILL dog, for one a maltese is SMALL from 2 to 7 pounds 6 max preferred, I OWN a NORMAL breed MALTESE he is 3 pounds, and VERY VERY fragile i may ad, so hope you have THE time to spend with him or her and patience as Maltse love to be with owner , they are one owner dog and prefer to be with you as much as possible, if you work train him or her to be alone asap and be home asap after work to give your dog her or her excericise and attention, as for tempermant MALTESE loves all animals and people , this breed gets along with everyone and everything AS LONG AS YOU SOCIALIZE them YOUNG, as for terriors SORRY their barky, snappy and can be very agressive to other dogs and cats, they are a demanding mean dog at times and protective of their owners with people and animals, This is why i went with the maltese, i did not want a barky shaky nervous yorky, so again as in teacups, NO SUCH THING, and if you found one then they were either mixed and played with by genitecis or u may of got lucky getting a runt which make the maltese or yorky small NOT teacup. Maltese require high maintence for hair and ears, nails bathings puppy cuts ect
