About Tallahassee, FL

Tallahassee is the capital of Florida, with 181,000 inhabitants—and growing fast. Located in the Florida panhandle, Tallahassee houses 9 universities and colleges, and has one of the largest growing high-tech/manufacturing economies in the country. Its humid subtropical climate makes it ideal for vacations and outdoor activities. Its closeness to the gulf coastline makes it ideal for watersports and beach visits. Recently, the city has become an important spring for political news, especially after the dramatically close results of the 2000 presidential election.

  • Florida State University

Florida State University is located in Tallahassee, which is also the capitol of Florida. But, with another university in town, it is far more college oriented than one would think. FSU has 41,000 students and 81% of them live off campus. The streets and areas closest to campus are the oldest. Just slightly beyond them are new high rise complexes with every kind of amenity imaginable. With great beaches a little over an hour away, you may want to have a car. Biking to campus is an option for class days so keep transportation in mind when you search for your FSU apartment.

Places to eat near the campus include all the usual chain ones, but there are a number of more local establishments that are great. Gordo's is a favorite that serves Cuban food, and Po' Boys serves Cajun. Most in the university neighborhood cater to students tastes and wallets. The further you go away from campus, the more expensive it becomes but when the parents come to town, it's fun to splurge.

The Tennessee Street strip is where most students find their favorite bars. It's close to campus and there are a number of great bars to choose from. Bullwinkle's gets high ranking and almost any night, the girls drink free. Late Night Library is great for techno dancing. For just plain old bars, stop into Poor Paul's and Down Below. Both are great spots to just hang.

    Drumlines and Degrees

Florida A&M University’s award-winning marching band, Marching 100, has performed at the Super Bowl, the Grammys, and several other distinguished events. If you walk to the beat of your own drum, you’ll love attending this prestigious institution. Along with seriously sweet saxophone skills, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University boasts an impressive selection of degree programs, including a Bachelor of Science in Jazz Studies and Master of Science in Architecture. Whether you have a passion for the blues or buildings, you’ll receive a great education at FAMU. The university enrolls approximately 12,000 students from more than 60 countries around the world; you’ll be singing “Rattlers will strike, and strike and strike again!” with classmates from Egypt to Brazil. With all FAMU has to offer, it’s no wonder Forbes named it one of the best colleges in 2011.

    Charming Apartments

If you’re not into weekly dorm meetings and icebreaker activities, you’ll want to look for off-campus housing at Florida A&M. Most students start searching for apartments before the end of the school year, but it’s recommended you keep an eye out as soon as possible—what you’ll find are affordable multi-unit apartments and townhouses. Some even offer amenities like pools and fitness centers for semester-long de-stressing. If you need a roommate or two to cut back on rent, check out our apartment hunting guide. We’ll help you avoid moving in with people prone to blasting thrash metal at 3 a.m.

    Off-Campus Catharsis

You’ll have as much fun as Venom the school mascot after a game-winning touchdown, with all the entertaining attractions off FAMU’s campus. Hop on a StarMetro bus and head over to The Fun Station. A good game of laser tag might be just what you need to make up for that last-minute term paper rewrite. Sick of daily ramen? Head over to Gordo’s for some delicious Cuban cuisine. Should you stain your shirt with BBQ pork, you can always stop by Governor's Square Mall and pick up a new one—or some stain remover. Once you’re suitably dressed, visit Bullwinkle’s and chill out with your buddies from Partial Differential Equations class. With all the fun you have off campus, Venom will be calling you up for advice.
