San Franscisco State University is an average sized university, offering one of the country's largest ranges of different degrees programs. There are 117 areas of study for undergraduates, 96 for masters and 34 certificate programs.
This wonderfully diverse city is a place where you can go from museums to mountains, from nightclubs to quiet night time walks. The city is the fourth most populous in California, and while it is completely different to New York in the opposite corner of the country, it is no less a cultural center.
The area of San Francisco immediately surrounding SFSU is considered quite walkable, with a score of 75 out of 100. You have limited choice in most amenities within a short quarter mile walk, and whatever you can't reach on foot (it is a very hilly city!) is served by public transit. The Municipal Railway operates streetcars, a metro, buses and cable cars, and there are also regional trains services with BART for the Bay area and Caltrain to San Jose.
If you're looking for a neighborhood close to school for your apartment rental, Ingleside Heights, Merced Heights and Saint Francis Wood are some of the neighborhoods immediately surrounding SFSU. Saint Francis Wood will be out of the reach of many students (unless you're a Hollywood actor by day!) - Ingleside Heights and Merced Heights are more affordable and not too population-dense.
There are plenty of events in these neighborhoods in San Francisco, including the Spectrum Festival for party people, film festivals, folk festivals and outdoor concerts.
San Francisco is a large city, however with few apartments in close proximity to your school. A car will extend your housing and rental options greatly, especially considering that the cheapest apartments in the same postcode as SFSU start at $900 per month!
We mentioned that San Francisco is a US center of culture - and two of the things that help truly define culture are dining and nightlife. For better nightlife diversity, you'll want to head northeast into the center of San Francisco, but for a quick drink and a relaxing hour after school try The Dubliner or The Pub and Depot. Ambrosia Bakery and Nordstrom Café offer you delectable dining right near school, and a welcome change from boiled noodles!

University of California, Hastings College of Law (UC Hastings for short) is the third largest public law school in the US and a part of the UC system. It’s in the beautiful city of San Francisco, right by the city hall and just a couple of blocks from state and federal courts. Going here will really boost your cred, as UC Hastings is ranked #42 on the US News & World Report list for the nation’s top law schools, and has a pretty high bar passage rate. Hastings will provide the hands-on training in court to make you feel like a member of the Law & Order cast…but in real life.
100 McAllister Street, also known as the “McAllister Tower” or simply “The Tower”, is a building dedicated to student housing. More than 300 law students and their families live in this building, because it’s close to classes and student life. However, many students forgo The Tower to live off campus, and San Francisco has a great selection of apartments all over the map. You can choose to live near the hustle and bustle of Hastings, or you can find for something in the quieter parts of the Bay Area. The San Francisco busline Muni and the Bay Area Transit System (BART) are both within walking distance from campus and can easily take you to and from school, no matter where you move!
The area around campus is known as Civic Center, because it’s home to SF’s City Hall and many municipal courts and institutions. The Asian Art Museum and the main branch of the San Francisco Public Library are also within walking distance of your classes! If you’re in the mood for some live shows, the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium is right on the Plaza and regularly hosts bands and DJs as they roll through town. Civic Center is just one stop away from the city’s major shopping areas, and only three stops from the piers, where you’ll find all kinds of restaurants, shops, and things to do. San Francisco is a really compact city, but there’s so much to discover in this 7 x 7 mile gem.
The University of San Francisco is located in the heart of one of the nation’s most exciting cities, beside both the Golden Gate Bridge and Golden Gate Park. The school is called USF for short, or “Hilltop” for its view overlooking the city. The view on campus isn’t so bad, either; it’s home to such famous buildings as the towering Saint Ignatius Church and the modern Gleeson Library. Although USF is an old Jesuit university, it welcomes all students regardless of belief. Try to spot its mascot, The Don, in the 8,800 students who attend (just ask campus, he’s very mysterious).
Everybody wants to live in San Francisco, so finding a place won’t be the easiest thing in the world—pick up some apartment hunting strategies from ourapartment guide. You'll see that there are some nice (albeit pricy) condominium apartment units available in our listings, many of them located close to the Golden Gate Bridge and offering spectacular views. There are other properties spread all around the city, however, and the USF campus is a great location from which to branch our and explore. Only about 40% of USF undergraduates live in the dorms, so look around for some classmates who might be willing to split rent. Want the inside scoop on finding roommates? Read up on our college life articles.
San Francisco is blessed with great public transportation, from BART and MUNI trains to buses and classic streetcars. Lucky for you: you’ll need help getting to the myriad of interesting things happening throughout the city, and from USF’s central location, nothing’s too far away. Check out local newspapers like the The Guardian or SF Weekly to keep updated on the latest events. No matter what you’re into—Disney Sing-a-Longs, Gay Pride, handmade ice cream, vintage hipster furniture, authentic Mexican cuisine, micro-brewed beer, professional sports teams—San Francisco has it, and it’s waiting for you.
