Roanoke is the 10th biggest city in the state of Virginia. Interestingly enough, it used to be called “Big Lick”. As of the 2010 census, Roanoke had a population of nearly 100,000 residents, and the city’s metro area had over triple that number, coming in at 303,418 people. Roanoke has a long and storied history, and was founded as Big Lick in the 1850s, right before the Civil War. The name was changed to Roanoke thirty years later, and the name comes with a significant Native American influence.
