Odessa, Texas is located in the middle western part of Texas and is the county seat of Ector County. With a population over just over 100,000, Odessa is the 31st most populous city in Texas. Founded in 1881, Odessa was a cattle shipping point in the late 1800s and then incorporated in 1927 after oil was discovered. The discovery of oil drove the population to increase through World War II. With a total area of 44 square miles, Odessa features three universities and its economy is driven by oil production. However, the three major employers are the Ector County School District, the local hospital and Saulsbury Industries, a local construction and engineering company.
