  • The University of Iowa

Those who are thinking of attending University of Iowa and are not currently watching the 1962 version of the Music Man at this exact moment are doing themselves a real disservice. You can learn a lot from Robert Preston, who will teach you that you ought to give Iowa a try.

    Give Iowa a Try

Seventy-six trombones lead the big parade at the University of Iowa’s football games and wrestling matches. The Carver-Hawkeye Arena is not the only place of action; the Hawkeyes also compete and work together in the classroom. At UI there are twelve colleges, from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences to the College of Nursing to the College of Dentistry. The school offers several resources for students in need of tutors, academic guidance, or instructional services regarding technology. Overall, students are happy with their experience at UI, and find that the people of Iowa are not as stubborn as the Music Man would suggest. That is why 70% of undergrads opt to live off campus!

    Till There was You

There were birds in the sky, but you never saw them winging, till there was Iowa. Students are attracted to Iowa, and Iowa City is attracted to students. The town revolves around the school, and locals have just as much university pride as the students do. Though Iowa City is relatively small, the mass of activities offered makes this Midwestern town feel big. There are music venues, bars and restaurants, shopping areas like the Pedestrian, Coral Ridge, and Old Capitol Mall, and tons of parks and hiking trails. Students find that getting around is easy since there is public transportation-a-plenty. The Cambus is the campus bus that will get you around school, while the Iowa City Transit will take you to the attractions in town. The people, activities, nightlife, and public transportation make renting an off-campus apartment in Iowa a pleasant experience for all. College Street and Ralston Creek are lousy with available apartments within walking distance from campus. Coralville and Downtown are popular too, but apartments farther from campus are likely to have cheaper rent. For help learning how to search for apartments see our apartment search guides!

    Madame Librarian

Studying and being in the library is great and all, but when the weekend rolls around, students take off their glasses, throw down their hair, and party like it’s 1962 in River City. Hawkeyes keep their party reputation alive by heading to the bars to drink, dance, socialize, and do the things you do at bars…minus bar fights, hopefully. Bars in the city generally allow people nineteen and older, so most everyone can be included. The Union Bar is great for a Thursday or Friday night outing. For Saturday, maybe try Vito’s Bar/Club and dance dance dance.
