  • University of Indianapolis

    University of Indianapolis

One of the smallest universities in the states, University of Indianapolis, or UIndy, has just 4500 students. However, it also has one of the broadest opportunity profiles of any school in the nation, with a branch campus in Athens and campus affiliations with schools in Belize, China, Israel and Cyprus.

    Indy's 500 Industries

Indianapolis was once centered mostly on government and manufacturing, but today encompasses many more opportunities. Education and health care are focuses of the city, as are tourism and finance. Not to mention the Indy 500! It is the only state capital to be in the exact center of its state, and offers parks, museums, fairgrounds, wineries and gardens for weekend activities.

    Bring a Car to Indy

A car is almost essential to properly enjoy Indianapolis - although you can take comfort in the fact that it won't be necessary to use it for much of your time at university. While the area around U Indy scores only 65 out of 100 for walkability, it does have plenty of amenities within half a mile. Grocery stores, restaurants, bars, fitness, drug stores, clothing and music areal within half a mile of the campus.

For those truly concerned about the environment (well done!), check out Indianapolis' public transit system. It is clean and well-run, however the routes can take a little time to get used to.

    South of the City

South Village, Southdale, Bean Creek and Carson Heights are the neighborhoods closest to the University of Indianapolis, if you prefer to walk where you can. All of these neighborhoods are a short distance south of the city itself, so while you'll probably spend much of the week in the same place, you'll most likely head north for the weekend!

    University of Indianapolis Apartments

Indianapolis has a good diversity of apartments, at a good range of prices. While you will be slightly south and east of the city center at UIndy, most of the apartment rentals and housing is actually clustered in the suburbs south of the city, anyway.

You can get a clean, spacious apartment with a pool for under $450 per month, and studios aren't the only choice! Greenwood and Imperail Hills are where you'll find much of the cheap housing rentals.

    Engaging with Indianapolis

Indianapolis has a decent range of nightlife and dining, although the city is more centered on commerce and motorsport. The Marion County Fair offers a great night out, for even 6 foot tall children! Tipsey's Bar and Grill and Gallaghers are some of the nightlife venues that are more likely to have live music, but mostly you'll get used to quiet relaxing nights at the pub with a good beer.

For lunchtime munchies, China Garden, Cheeseburger in Paradise, and Chik-Fil-A are close, reliable and cheap!

  • Butler University

    Butler University

Butler is regarded as one of the best schools in the country for academic quality, probably due in part to its tight focus on the liberal arts and sciences. You'll always speak to a teacher, rather than a teaching assistant, and class sizes at your new school are nice and intimate!

    Number One City for Graduates

Indianapolis is home to Butler University, and you've chosen well in terms of location of your college. Indianapolis was recently ranked #1 of the top ten cities for recent graduates, owing to a diverse economy and growing number of opportunities. The twelfth largest city in the world is also known as the world's 'Racing Capital' ... although college will no doubt pass quite slowly sometimes!

    Will Drive for Food

Indianapolis is quite a car-dependent city - although Butler University is quite close to the city center, the area around your school gets a walk score of only 35 out of 100. Pizza and coffee are quite close by, but you'll need to walk over three quarters of a mile for other amenities.

    Butler Service to These Neighborhoods

Wynnedale, Spring Hill, Crows Nest and the delicious-sounding Rocky Ripple are all neighborhoods located ideally for Butler University students. The general area of all these neighborhoods is known as the Near North, a part of the city with a mix of commercial and residential facilities, great diversity in apartments and housing for rent, and near to medical facilities as well as shopping!

Fast Living in Indianapolis, City of Racing

The near north neighborhoods have plenty of housing for students, mostly at extremely reasonable prices. You can also look just east and west of the city for quite a selection of apartments for rent. Indianapolis is one of the few US cities where student apartments of decent quality can be found for under $400 per month.

Racy Entertainment and Fast Food in the City of Racing

While Indianapolis is mostly known for its motorsport, nightlife and dining in Indianapolis is actually quite varied. If you're looking for lunchtime sustenance, China King is cheap, cheerful and close to school. Puck's indy/metro style café is delicious and highly recommended, but does have a dress code and some substantial price tags. Head into the city for Yat's Cajun/Creole food and Café Patachou's delicious brunches.

As well as night time formula one cars, check out the Melody Inn - only a short stroll from school, and one of the city's best reviewed bars and nightlife venues. Talbott Street is a fun night out for gay and straight alike, especially on a Friday with $2.50 drink specials.
