With 71 degree programs in 26 different academic departments, this affordable university in Hammond, Louisiana offers plenty of career paths, as long as you’re not bent on pro lion-taming. This exceptional institution, founded as Hammond Junior College, was located in a local high school building. It’s come a long way since its faculty consisted of two men and three women, but SLU still possesses the same pioneering spirit (just without whiny high schoolers around.) With students from more than 40 states and over 50 foreign countries, you’re sure to find a few people into that whole “pile into a phone” booth thing. You’ll love SLU so much, you’d have Roomie the Lion as a roommate, if only his giant head would fit through the door.

Off-campus housing within walking distance of campus consists of a few townhouses and multi-unit complexes. Apartments are affordable, but you’ll need to act fast to find a place that will accommodate your mad dashes to early morning class. 60% of students surveyed by College Prowler said that off-campus housing at SLU is worth it.
