Des Moines is the largest city in Iowa, and its capital, with just over 200,000 residents. It is named for the Des Moines River, meaning “of the monks”. It’s perhaps best known as the site of the Iowa caucuses, and as such is one of the most politically monitored cities in presidential elections. It is also a hub for most of the large insurance companies in the United States, as well as related banks and financial companies. Forbes ranked #1 in “America’s Best Cities for Young Professionals” in 2011 and the “Best Place for Business” in 2010.
