The city of Charleston is the state of West Virginia’s capital. It is the biggest and most populous city in the entire state. The city is middle-sized when compared to other cities in the country, with a 2010 population of just over 51,000 people. Charleston’s metro area is much larger, and comes in with a population of over 300,000, though that number is said to be shrinking as mining and manufacturing jobs leave the area. Charleston is also the county seat for Kanawha County, which still has a significant Native American population.
