    Welcome to UMass Amherst!

Located in the hometown of poetess Emily Dickenson, The University of Massachusetts at Amherst is a school famous for its outstanding programs in a variety of disciplines—computer science, philosophy, engineering, and liberal arts, to name a few. A lot of interesting alumni hail from this school...the members of the popular 1990s rock band The Pixies, for example, met when they were all students at UMass, and they even wrote a song about it! If you think indie rock is the only pastime for students (who are also known as Minutemen and Minutewomen) think again: sports are a big part of campus culture, as you can tell from just a few minutes of watching the school’s basketball team. What a campus it is, too! The vast spread of buildings includes both the ancient and modern, from Old Chapel to the W.E.B. DuBois Library.

    Off-Campus in Amherst

Amherst is quintessential New England, so why not live in it, rather than on campus? It’s pretty big, as towns go, and UMass isn’t the only college around...you might find yourself running into the freewheeling folks of Hampshire College or Amherst College as well. Get a jump on your apartment search for the area with our apartment search guides. Units can range from the quite-pricey to the surprisingly-economical, so search your heart, make a budget, and be discerning as you browse. Taking Advantage of Amherst

Regardless of whether or not you like poetry, visit the Emily Dickson Museum. It's arguably Amherst's biggest cultural attraction, and you should be able to discuss it when your literary-minded aunts come to town. How to get there? Amherst’s PVTA transit system, of course. (UMass has its own student shuttle that loops around campus to critical locations like classrooms, cafeterias, and the library.) The downtown is lovely and lively; it might be nice to have a bike handy, or to just stroll around. Some hotspots in town you should know about: the venue the Iron Horse Music Hall, the Hippodrome, and Calvin's Theatre. There is an equally vibrant nightlife scene on- and off-campus in Amherst. You might make an appearance at a frat party, then go in to town to see some music, then come back to campus to hang out in the dorms, all in the same night! You'll be thanking your lucky stars that there is such good public transportation in Amherst, with all the good events to travel between.
