College can be like a merry-go-round. You have ups and downs, but it is a fun ride all the way around. The University of Maryland, College Park is one merry-go-land that you won’t want to hop off of.
Besides its ideal location between Baltimore and Washington D.C., the University of Maryland has lots to offer. From academics to sports to clubs to awesome peers, you will not be bored and your mind will remain challenged. One of my personal regrets in college was that I didn’t form bonds with some of my professors. This was mostly because I was convinced that they were all celebrities so I was too intimidated to approach them. At UMCP, professors are available and attentive to student needs and questions, so don’t be afraid to go to office hours! Bonding with professors is one thing, but bonding with your entire school is another. To do that, just join in with the rest of the Terps to cheer for your school’s NCAA Division 1-A football team. What’s a Terp? I have no idea, but it is your soon-to-be-mascot.
This merry-go-round has been fun, but it’s time to get off for the night and go home to your newly rented apartment. With campus being so close to two major cities, many students find a place off campus where they can be free to explore the surrounding area and really immerse themselves in Mary-go-Land. Though living off campus might not be the cheapest option, in many instances apartment rent is comparable to the cost of living in UMCP dorms. To lessen the cost of off-campus living, try finding an apartment a little further from campus and take advantage of College Park’s fabulous public transportation. Between the Shuttle-UM service, the Metro systemand the buses, students will find that a car in College Park is unnecessary, and getting to and from your apartment will be easy (make sure to allow time for traffic, though). Apartment search guides will make it easy to find an apartment that suits you! Living in College Park has more advantages than just great apartments and pub trans. There are plenty of cute restaurants in the business district. College Park is fairly small, so it is overtaken with students and feels like a perfect small college town with big cities like D.C and Baltimore conveniently nearby.
Get back on the merry-go-round and then get off at the bars in College Park. A sports bar student favorite is RJ Bentley’s, where U of MD students (who forgot to get season tickets), love to gather round and catch a home game. If you want a little more urban excitement head down to Baltimore to get down at The Get Down. With so much to learn, do and see you will want to keep on riding the Maryland merry-go-round!
