About Philadelphia, PA

Located in the southeast corner of Pennsylvania, on the border of New Jersey, Philadelphia is a beautifully diverse city where the arts and sciences flourish. Rich with history and loaded with significant landmarks, like the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, the city is also known for its innovative and creative culture. The birthplace to Philadelphia soul, the music scene has also supported major artists in hip hop and rock. With well-kept urban parks and numerous museums to visit, there’s always something to do in Philly. Plus with teams like the Phillies, the 76ers, and the Eagles, you can take pride in the home team.
  • Thomas Jefferson University

    Thomas Jefferson University

With a big name, but a small student body, Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia was founded as Jefferson Medical College, and still focuses exclusively on health sciences. It opened an infirmary to treat the poor in 1825, and also administered the first hospital that was affiliated with a university.

Many Opportunities for Medical Students in Philadelphia

Philadelphia was the site of the British North American colonies' first hospital, Pennsylvania hospital, as well as the nation's first medical school, at Penn. There are plenty of opportunities for medical graduates in this thriving city of around 1.4 million.

The city at large may be one of America's most walkable cities, but there is also an extensive public transit system for when the burn gets a bit much. There is a subway and two commuter rail lines, as well as buses and trolleys around the city center. There are plenty of car rental and taxi options, if you just want to get out of the city for a short time, or need a lift home.

Philadelphia - Brotherly Love and Fun Festivals

Philadelphia has an extremely well developed portfolio of annual events throughout its neighborhoods. The Young Artists Annual Festival Concert is always a good way to exercise the right side of your brain (the left side will get a great workout at Thomas Jefferson U!), and there are plenty of cross cultural events like the Italian Market Festival, Celtic Heritage Festival and Ukranian Folk Festival to drag you away from your apartment.

Great Placement, Great Prices - Philadelphia Apartments

Apartments for rent are thick on the ground in the Thomas Jefferson University area, with its central location. There are plenty of high end rental options priced from $1000 per month upwards, and if you have plenty of friends to share with these are excellent value.

Lower end apartments and housing starts at around $500 per month in Philly, but climbs fairly slowly, leaving an excellent selection for between $500 and $600, mostly 3 to 6 miles from the center of town. Something for all Palates in Philly - Dining and Nightlife

Cuisines for all palates can be found within an easy walk of the Thomas Jefferson U buildings. Everything from Dutch Eating Place, to Vetri (which serves Italian) and Horizons, a vegan and vegetarian haven, can be found a short drive away from school. Beau Monde, Golden Empress Garden, and Alyan's Restaurant are closer to school.

You won't have to go far for nightlife either - check out Tattooed Mom and Chick's Café and Wine Bar for two very different but equally loved hotspots.

It was actually once the second-largest city in the British Empire, after London! In the nation's first capital, history, sightseeing, local markets, block parties, yard sales and other community events are the most popular weekend activities.

    Strangely Spread Out!

Philadelphia is not particularly walkable - an odd characteristic for an historic, well-populated city! The area around Philadelphia University is ranked 49 out of 100 for walkability - most amenities are located over half a mile from the school. Put your skates on!

Philly Neighborhoods Filled With Brotherly Love

Fairmount and Germantown are the largest neighborhoods in close proximity to Philadelphia University. You can also check out Manayunk and Wynnefield. Fairmount dwellers are close to the art museum and cultural attractions, while in Germantown, historic buildings, shopping and education are the focus. If you're looking for somewhere quiet, but not too expensive, focus your search on apartments inWynnefield.

    Affordable Apartments in Philadelphia

Studio apartments are less prevalent in Philadelphia, but are available at excellent prices. $350 per month will get you a neat and tidy studio apartment within 7 miles from school. If you want to be within biking distance of Philadelphia University, apartment rentals within 2 miles of school start at around $500 per month.

    Always Fun in Philadelphia

Philadelphians live in one of the most beautifully historic cities in the US ... and they like to celebrate it at every opportunity! Festivals and fairs are staged for such eclectic topics as India, Hippies, Doo Wop and the Caribbean, as well as every alternative culture you could poke a stick at!

For everyday dining and nightlife, though, there are plenty of great options close to school. Dahlak Restaurant and Upperdeck are popular with students. McMenamin's, the Dawson Street Pub and the Bayou Bar and Grill all get great reviews, and are within cheap taxi distance of home!

  • Temple University

    Temple University, Philadelphia

One of the universities with the broadest range of specializations, Temple University is known for its health, law, education and media programs. Just over 35,000 students currently attend TU, and with a good teacher-student ratio of around 10:1, it is no wonder that this is a highly regarded institute. TU is a state-related university, meaning that residents of Pennsylvania are able to attend for reduced fees but the school is still independent.

    Finding Philly Student Neighborhoods

Just behind Phoenix in population size, Philadephia is the sixth most populous city in the US. It is also the nation's fourth-largest consumer media market, as the city itself is quite affluent. TU is located in North Philly, with Templetown the district surrounding the school. For housing close to TU, you'll be looking at areas like Poplar, Kensington, Fairmount and Yorktown. The Northern Liberties area is also a popular area for students to look for apartment rentals and housing, with plenty of galleries, boutique shops, intimate nightlife venues. It is considered Philadelphia's version of SoHo.

Expenses with benefits, or Reasonable Student Accommodation

Housing and apartments near to TU can be quite expensive, with five of the closest apartment complexes asking over $1,200 per month for an apartment. These nearby housing options include names like The Piazza, The Chocolate Works and The Metropolitan. Lofts 640 is just over a mile from TU, and while a studio apartment is around $1,300 per month, there are some great bonuses like fitness center access, a gated complex, wifi, a swimming pool and hot tub. However, you only have to range 3 to 6 miles from TU to find much more reasonably priced accommodation and apartments for rent, starting at $450 per month and with plenty of choices if your budget is up to $600.

    Highly Walkable Philly

One thing that helps offset the cost of the upper end of your student accommodation is the fact that you won't need a car in the TU area of Philly, with a walk score of 97 out of 100 it is rated a walker's paradise. Up to 8 grocery stores, 8 restaurants and 8 coffee shops are all within an easy third of a mile walk from school, giving you plenty of options for a caffeine fix and a change of scenery between classes.

    Nightlife Without Taxis

Get out and about away from your apartment at hundreds of nightlife venues in Philly. There's no need to pay for a taxi home from several great bars, clubs and pubs. Fado Irish Pub is popular, a mid-priced late night venue on Avenue of the Arts. With soccer on the TV and engaging activities like pub quizzes, it is one of the 'quieter' and more intimate nightlife venues.

If you're seeking music, check out the Electric Factory, or Ortlieb's Jazzhaus and Club Baday. A quick walk down South Street should present you with highly agreeable nightlife options.

  • Drexel University

    Check out Drexel University

Home of the mascot "Mario the Magnificent" dragon, blue & gold Drexel University is an excellent private research university in the City Of Brotherly Love. Philadelphia, baby! This place has a lot going for it, like the cool goggles everyone seems to wear...see for yourself on their nifty homepage. It's all Science, Industry, and Art. You can get involved with programs that give you real-life (and paid!) work experience as you finish your degree in Engineering, Business, Art, or what-have-you. In 2011, the U.S. News & World Report's "Up & Coming Universities" list has Drexel right up there at #6, which is pretty impressive considering the competition! U Penn ain't the only game in town, folks. You might seriously want to think about getting your education here at 'DU', especially if you’re already a Philly lover.

    The Housing Situation: Philly!

The first thing you should know when you're looking for an apartment rental around Drexel University is that the actual campus is located in North Philly near the Wissahickon Valley Park. Think of this entire city as your oyster...that rings true since only 35% of undergrads tend to live in provided on-campus housing. You can learn about apartment hunting using our apartment guide. There are condo-style properties, cozy little apartments in little buildings, or apartments in big complexes, and some of these are located more towards the city outskirts like Upper Darby. Look around at all that's offered, and suit yourself! You can also learn more about college life using our handy blog articles.

    Getting Around And Recreation

Biking is a great way to get around; it's eco-friendly, good for your health, and you can do it most of the year in Philadelphia. There are also friendly SEPTA public transit buses and subway in Philly—there are actually two (count 'em: TWO) subway entrances just two blocks outside campus, from different sides. Philly is known for its nightlife, importance in American history, and stellar museums. How about a little carousing, hey, you're in college! The Liberty Bell can wait. Browse College Prowler’s useful nightlife info page to get a run-down of the hip bars that Drexel students are most likely to visit. Yep. You will probably never run out of cool bars, music venues, and clubs to check out in this sophisticated, totally dynamic city. They say there are even some interesting microbreweries once you venture out into the Philadelphia suburbs, if you're feeling adventurous...Manayunk is probably the closest to campus.

    Overview: The University Of Pennsylvania

A great locus of creative and historic energy, 'U Penn' is a distinguished member of the Ivy League and one of the oldest colleges in America. Their colors are a dark red and blue, and they are nicknamed 'The Quakers'. The campus is located right where West-Central Philadelphia officially begins, across the Schuylkill River from downtown. Donald Trump, like it or not, went to school here. U Penn is an urban campus but also features sprawling, tree-filled green space and some very old buildings dating back to its founding in 1740—started by a guy named Benjamin Franklin, maybe you've heard of him? Some famous buildings include The University Museum, Warden Garden, the gorgeous Lower Quad, and the big red Fischer Fine Arts Library, a.k.a. the Furness Library. U Penn excels in the fields of Arts & Science, Literature, and Engineering, among other disciplines.
