College of Charleston, or C of C, is a small private liberal arts school, and the oldest college in South Carolina. It’s a historic school that traces its roots all the way back to the American Revolution—historic, but still provides a leading and cutting-edge education. If you’ve never lived in an urban area before, don’t sweat. Although the College is located downtown, Charleston has a really relaxed atmosphere, with friendly people and good food.
Even though the school rents out university-owned historic homes, the majority of the students do not live in campus housing, and really, why would you when you’re in Charleston? This laidback and vibrant city offers many rental options, and the downtown area is filled with C of C students. Many of the available listings in Charleston are apartment units in larger complexes with pools and fitness centers, but you’ll also find that a lot of the single-family homes will rent out a floor to local students. If you want to stake out a nice place, you better start in the early spring, because apartments downtown are in great demand. Read more on college life so you’ll know how to maintain your apartment and deal with less-than-perfect roomies.
Everyone at College of Charleston will agree that the city could not be more perfect for college students. The town itself is easygoing, which really neutralizes the stress of classes and deadlines. In Charleston, you have the option of hanging out in an urban downtown or on a quiet, sandy beach. Yes, there are several of them, and they are only a 20-minute drive away from campus. Enjoy seafood at the local staple Fleet Landing, which is right on water and has views of the harbor. If you want to make the most of your time, get a bike before you head it school; any C of C student will tell you that it makes it much easier to get around town and explore the beauty of Charleston. Fun Fact: The Notebook was filmed on this campus.
