About Hamden, CT

Old-world New England charm is the first thing you will notice about Hamden. A suburb of New Haven, Hamden was been rated #33 on Fortune magazine's Best Places to Live and Launch list, and #53 on CNN Money's list of the 100 Best Place to Live. These lists cite incentives for small business owners, an exceptional school system, an active classical music community, and the vitality that comes from local Quinnipiac University as reasons that Hamden is a great place to live for families and professionals.

    Boast Being a Bobcat

Shout it from the rooftops! "I am a bobcat!" And how comfortably the Quinnipiac University Bobcats study, with lovely learning facilities such as a news technology center, digital and audio production studios, and both a mass communication and a financial technology center. Also, have you seen the library? It is HUGE and, dream of all dreams, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Quinnipiac University has four major schools: the College of Liberal Arts, the School of Business, the School of Health Sciences, and the School of Communications. Until recently, Quinnipiac University was best known for its health sciences programs, though nowadays Public Relations and Communications are giving them a run for their money. If volunteering abroad interests you, stop by the Albert Schweitzer Institute office to learn about alternative spring break options and study abroad programs.

    Havin’ a Place in Hamden

Keep in mind that Quinnipiac University owns quite a bit of off-campus property. Do remember that the early bird (or, in this case, bobcat) really does get the worm, so start scanning for housing in November for a place in August! (If you're feeling over-the-top proactive, that is.) If you are reading this and thinking about off-campus housing it probably means you are an upper-classman, which also means that you are allowed a car at Quinnipiac. Congrats! And, unless you want to take the shuttle around town (which, by the way, is totally do-able) a car is a popular option among many Quinnipiac students. Now, for those without cars, here's the down-low on the shuttles: there are two of them, one for downtown Hamden and one for downtown New Haven. Shuttles run every 50 minutes from 12 p.m. to 12 a.m. on weekdays, and until 12 a.m. on weekends. They stop at grocery stores, shopping spots, and, get this, clubs and a bus. That's right kids, youre own personal "drunk bus." Shuttles can also take you right to Union Station, which gets you to good ol' NYC, as well as lots of other places.

    "Live and Launch"

In 2008, Fortune Magazine dubbed Hamden as one of the best places to "live and launch." Just look at Eli Whitney, arguably Hamden's best example of a "well-launched" individual. Find out how it feels to be an inventor by visiting the Eli Whitney Museum and Workshop. Learn how to work with what you have, be it string, batteries, or wood, and make something of your own in the workshop. Get classy at Ibiza, voted "Best Tapas" by Connecticut Magazine. For some live music and a couple drinks, head to Wicked Wolf Tavern (Irish cavern!).
