About Portage, MI
Situated on the most southern edge of Lake Michigan, Portage is the third largest city in the northeastern portion of the state. The city is known for its camping and outdoor activities, thanks to the closeness of the Great Lakes. Historically, the area was split into three different townships named McCool, Crisman, and Garyton. It was not until 1835 that the town of Portage was incorporated, and then began to grow as a community. Today, Portage is an ideal place to put down some roots.
