About East Lansing, MI

  • Michigan State University

Making a Home at Michigan State University

Founded in 1855 as an agricultural school, Michigan State University has risen through the years to become one of the most highly regarded 'Public Ivy’ colleges in the country. Superb athletics, international humanitarian programs, and serious academics all play an important role in the experience of Michigan State’s 47,000 students. What else plays a role? Its historic campus, complete with an ice arena, a state-of-the-art basketball stadium, and the unique Veterinary Research Farm.

    Renting Apartments In East Lansing

Although freshman must live on campus, once you’re a sophomore, the sky’s the limit! Only 43% of undergraduates live in campus housing, so you’ll be in good company if you choose to look for your own place. East Lansing, Michigan is a small town, so apartments rentals are generally quite affordable and scattered around the campus area, usually just to the north near downtown, or to the west in Lansing. Start your search with our online apartment search guide! You can also get a sense of how your average university student feels about on-campus versus off-campus living, using our convenient college life link.

Transportation & Recreation In East Lansing

Driving (assuming you have a car, or are lucky enough to have a friend with one), biking, and of course plain ol' walking are all popular methods of getting around to and from campus at Michigan State. Fortunately, the campus is big but not too bewildering, and there are a lot of amenities within walking distance from the campus, no matter what you need. If you don't have wheels, there is always the East Lansing CATA bus network! East Lansing also tends to get a lot of snow in the winter months, so buses are a lifesaver. If you want to have a night out on the town, you're out of luck until your 21 or older. After that, however, for nightlife in East Lansing and Lansing proper, you should refer to Lansing City Pulse or 'Lansing Noise' here.
